PATRICK COUNTY, VA - COURT - Order Book "2" (Selected Entries, 1816) ----¤¤¤---- FEBRUARY COURT (15 Feb. 1816) Ordered by the Court that John Hall, Charles Foster Sr., Thomas Reives and William Fuson be appointed Commissioners to View away for a road from Capt. Fosters plantation aross Smiths river below the mouth of poplar camp creek into the road below John Halls that runs to Major Saunders of Franklin and report the same to this Court. A Deed of Gift from William Smith Sr. to Jane Lyon proved by 2 witnesses and Certified for further proof. Also from the same to Nancy Lyon, daughter of the sd Jane same. Also a deed from John and Thomas R. Halls Executors of N. Hall decd. to Jesse Clark acknowledged and ordered to be recorded. MAY COURT (16 May 1816) Peter Frans & Wm. Critz each Qualified as overseers of Poor of this county. Thomas Penn also Qualified as overseer of the Poor. Perin Cardwell & Clark Penn each are continued & appointed Constables in their former bounds in the Place of Alexander Murphy who is disqualified by his Misconduct, the bounds to be extended to bigg Dan river. Abram Penn appeared in Court & Qualified as an overseer of the Poor. Ordered that the Shff summon the Justices of this Court to appear at the Courthouse on the next Court day for the Purpose of recommending militia officers, repairing the old Courthouse or letting the building a new one, & opening the County levy etc. to settle the Price of Woolfs Scalps. A Deed of Trust from G. Lackey to Adrian Anglin Proved & O.R. John Hancock, Wm. Via & David Harbour each Qualified as overseers of the Poor for this County according to Law. Ordered that the Indenture binding a Girl aged 6 years the 1st March 1814 of the name of Charity Findley to Salley Rusk be Transfered & rebound to Gabriel Penn Jr., etc., by the Overseers of the Poor according to law. A Certificate from under the hand of Thomas Whitlock a Justice of this County perporting the importation of a negro Girl about 11 years old of the name of Keziah into this State by Elkanah Ayres, was presented in Court & Ordered to be recorded, agreeable to the Act of Assembly in that case, etc. Gabriel Hanby is appointed overseer of the road in the Place of Wm. Smith decd. in his former bounds, & his former hands be his Gang. Also a Deed from Elijah & Barnard Harris to William Booker acknowledged & Nancey the Wife of Elijah & Polley the wife of Barnard Harris being severally & Privily examined relinquished their rights of Dower, all of Which was Ordered to be recorded by the Court. Ordered that the hands of John Corn be Placed on the list of Thomas Baker & that they work on his road & be exempted from all other roads, & the hands of John Slaughter, John & Joseph Moles be put on George Lackey's list of hands & subject to his bounds & no other. John Clark Jr. is appointed surveyor of the road from the old Field below Col. Critz's to the forks below the Court house in the Place of Jesse Thompson & the former list of hands & all within those bounds be his Gang. Administration of the estate of Robert Sharp decd. is Granted to the Sheriff of this County, & it is Ordered that he proceed to the Execution of his Office as such agreeable to the Act of Assembly in that case made & provided. James Ingram, Jiles Martin & Jeremiah Burnett Jr., from the White falls to the Henry line are appointed as commissioners under the Act of Assembly in that case to View & to open the obstruction that may be in that part of the river to the passage of Fish & report etc., & from the White falls up to Wm. Burnetts, John Turner, Jeremiah Burnett Senr. & James Bartlett Jr. are also appointed to View etc. Jesse Corn appeared in Court together with Matt. Sandifur his security entered into bond for his performance as Ordinary Keeper, whereupon a License is Granted him for that purpose. Also Saml. Staples, with Wm. Lyon security the same. Wm. Jones, John & Austin Jones & Matt. Sandifur or any 3 of them are appointed to appraise the estate of Robert Sharp decd. & make report thereof to the Court according to law. On mo. of Wm. Lyon Deputy Shff who on oath satisfied the Court that he had summoned Coleman Loggin & William Rickman, Ordered that the said Shff proceed to sell them or hire them out according to law for the purpose of paying their taxes & County & parish levies for the present year. John Tatum Qualified as Overseer of the Poor according to law. An Inventory of the estate of Joshua Haynes decd. was retd. & O.R. JULY COURT (11 July 1816) ...a Deed from Wm. Lyon as D. Sheriff to Richard Thomas [ordered to be recorded]. AUGUST COURT (15 August 1816) William Lyon D.Shff. is fined fifty dollars for a contempt to this Court. William Hancock appeared in Court and quallified to his Commision appointing him a Justice of the peace in & for the said County of Patrick according to law. The fine today imposed upon Wm. Lyon Deputy Sheriff for contempt of Court, is remitted in consequence of sufficient acknowledgement being made. (Transcribed by Mary C.
