PATRICK COUNTY, VA - COURT - Order Book "2" (Selected Entries, 1817) ----¤¤¤---- JANUARY COURT (16 January 1817) Present: Gabriel Penn, Abram Penn, William Hancock, Jesse Corn, & Greensville Penn -- Gentlemen Justices An Instrument of Writing from under the hands & Seals of Elisabeth Lockhart & William Lockhart relative to the maintenance of the said Elisabeth Lockhart & the obligation on her part to her son William etc. was presented in Court Proved by the Oaths of the Witness thereto to be their act and Deed and the same was Ordered to be recorded. An Inventory of the Estate of James Nowlin decd. was retd. & O.R. Administration of the Estate of Archibald Shelton deceased to Rodah Shelton, widow & relict of the decedent, & Matthew Sandifur, who Qualified according to law, & they together with Gabriel & Greensville Penn their securities entered into bond according to law in the sum of one thousand dollars. H. Fitzgerald, George Fulcher, James Boaz & William Attkinson or any 3 of them are appointed to appraise the said estate & make report thereof to the Court. AUGUST COURT (15 August 1817) Thomas Whitlock Gentleman produced a commision to be sheriff of this County and Thereupon he together with William Carter, Abram Staples, Mathew Sandifur, Samuel Hanby Jr., William Lyon and Jacob Grigg, his securitys, entered into and acknowledged bond according to law for the faithfull discharge of the several dutys of the said Office which bond are ordered to be recorded and thereupon the said Thomas Whitlock took the oath of fidelity to the commonwealth, the oath of office and the oath to support the Constitution of the Genl. Government. William Lyon and Jacob Grigg are by Thomas Whitlock Gentlemen sheriff of this County appointed his undersheriffs during pleasure and thereupon the said Wm. Lyon & Jacob Grigg took the oath of fidelity to the Commonwealth, the oath of Office and the oath to support the Constitution of the Genl. Government. Anglin v Lacky and Corn Offic Judgment set aside payment and issue on William Chitwood and Jno. A. Corn Spl Bl. DECEMBER COURT (11 December 1817) A Deed from David Ross by his Attornies in fact, Edm. Banks & Jno. Duffield, to James Saunders & John Lyon with the Certificate of two Justices of Bedford County as to the acknowledgement, & the same was O.R. John Harbour is continued Constable in his former bounds & he together with Charles Foster Jr. his security entered into bond & acknowledged the same according to law. A Power of attorney from Josiah L. Ellis & Wife to John Smith Heir at law of Wm. Smith Jr. decd with the necessary Certificates thereon as to the acknowledgement and the same was ordered to be recorded. Two lists of Insolvent lands was presented in Court by Wm. Lyon & Jacob Grigg, Deputy Sheriffs for Thomas Whitlock Shff of this County for 1817, also their list of insolvent Property for the same year was inspected by the Court Allowed & Ordered to be Certified to the Auditer of Public Accounts.
