PATRICK COUNTY, VA - COURT - Order Book "3" (Selected Entries, 1824) ----¤¤¤---- FEBRUARY COURT (12 Feb. 1824) A deed from Eliphaz Shelton to Richard Fain proved and ordered to be recorded. MARCH COURT (13 March 1824) Ordered that William Lyon be allowed to retain in his hands $8.09 out of former depositums in his hands for ex officio services rendered heretofore as shown by the Court. APRIL COURT (15 April 1824) A deed from Samuel Staples to Joseph Sharp acknowledged and ordered to be recorded. Also a deed from Joseph Sharp to Frederick Gilbert acknowledged & ordered to be recorded. A power of attorney from Willis Wilson and Wife to John P. Wilson with the certificates annexed was exhibited in Court, examined and ordered to be recorded. Ordered that George Lackey, Abel Pedigo, and Thomas Baker be appointed Commissioners to enquire in to the expediency of securing the road lately changed around Jesse Corns fence & report thereupon to Court without delay. A deed from Thomas Penn agent for George Penn to Claiborn Shelton acknowledged and ordered to be recorded. Ordered that Wm. Crum, Thomas Penn & Thomas Sharp be appointed Commissioners to View away for Turning the road near Camrons(?) from the foot of the hill near where Th. Rickman lives around the fence & report to Court. MAY COURT (13 May 1824) ...a deed from Eliphaz Shelton to William Griffith proved by witnesses & Certified for further proof.... A Deed from E Shelton to Wm. Griffith further & fully proved and ordered to be recorded. JUNE COURT (17 June 1824) Commonwealth v. Olive Branch. Not guilty & issue & a Jury sworn to wit, James Tuggle, Francis Nowlin, John Nowlin, George Reynolds, Laurence Morrison, Hardin Beazay, Aaron Dehart, William Sandifur, Wm. Sharp, Abram Reynolds, Benjamin Harris & Marville Boulding. Jury went out could not agree. Benjamin Harris a Juror withdrawn & Cause Continued. On the motion of Thomas Sharp for leave to Continue his ordinary at his House in this County and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that he is a man of Honesty probity & good demeanor & that he does not permit unlawfull gaming to be carried on in his said Ordinary the same is granted him upon the usual Terms. To Solomon Washington for 4 days services as a surveyor of the road 2.00 To John Gilbert 5 days 2.50 To William Sharp 6 days 3.00 To Francis Nowlin 1 day .50 A Certificate of the Relinquishment of the right of dower by Martha Burnett wife of Jeremiah Burnett to a Certain tract of land Conveyed by Jeremiah Burnett to ....[left blank] was Exhibited in Court examined & ordered to be recorded. Also a Certificate of the Relinquishment of the right of dower by Susanah Slaughter wife of D. Slaughter was Exhibited in Court Examined & ordered to be recorded. To John Dehart for his services 6 days as surveyor of the road @ 50 Cents 3.00 To William Via 4 days ditto 2.00 To Jese Dehart 3 days & 1 sign board 2.00 To John Sharp 4 days 2.00 To George Lackey 3 days 1.50 To John Frans 4 days 2.00 JULY COURT (15 July 1824) John Lyon is appointed surveyor of the road in place of Wm. Lyon & it is ordered that the list of the hands filed be his gang. Ordered that the hands contained in a list filed be added to the gang of Wm. McAlexander. James Brammer is appointed surveyor of the road in place of Wm. Cassada resigned & it is ordered that his hands be those of the said Brammer. AUGUST COURT (12 August 1824) John Hall produced a Commission to be sheriff of this County and thereupon he together with Thomas Penn, Richard Thomas, Wm. Hancock, Jeremiah W. Hylton & A. Staples his securitys entered into and acknowedged bonds according to Law for the faithfull discharge of the several duties of the said Office which bonds are ordered to be recorded and thereupon the said J. Hall took the oath of fidelity to the Commonwealth, the oath of office, the oath of support the Constitution of the United States and the antiduelling oath. William Ayres, William Lyon, and Hardin Hall are by John Hall sheriff of this County appointed his undersheriffs during pleasure, it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that they are men of Honesty probity and good demeanor and thereupon the said William Ayres, Wm. Lyon and Hardin Hall took the several oaths prescribed by law for sheriffs. On the motion of William Carter for a License to Keep a House of private entertainment in this County, and upon the production of the recpt of the sheriff of this County for the License imposed by Law, the same is granted him upon the usual terms.
