PATRICK COUNTY, VA - COURT - Order Book "5" (Selected Entries, 1843) ----¤¤¤---- FEBRUARY COURT (16 February 1843) A list of deeds etc admitted to record in the clerks office since the last Term: A deed from Abrams Staples comr. to Frederick Gilbert. A deed from Same to Samuel Gilbert. A deed of Trust from Enock Wilson to Daniel Chester Trustee for the benefit of Jeremiah W. Hylton. Same from William Thompson to A. Stuart Trustee for the benefit of James Soyers. A deed from William A. Young & wife to Peyton Stone. A deed from William Via Sr. to John Thomas. A deed from William Via to David Griffith Trustee for the benefit of John Chambers. JUNE COURT (17 June 1843) John Hubbard is appointed a surveyor of the road in place of James Reynolds resigned and that the list of hands filed be and they do hereby constitute his company. Aaron Dehart is appointed a surveyor of the road in the place of Ammon Hatcher resigned and that the list of hands filed be and they do hereby constitute his company. Ordered that John Brammer & hands & William Lyon be and they do hereby constitute one of the company of John Massie. AUGUST COURT (18 August 1843) Same [Commonwealth] vs. Clark This day came the parties by their attornies and the defendant being solemnly called and not appearing it is ordered that the rule be made absolute and leave be given to file an information against him and thereupon afterwards came a Jury to wit, Aaron Rakes, Jackson Dillion, Chesley Rakes, James Bowling, Burr Harris, William Agee, Richard Burge, Joseph Hutchins, Richard B. Foley, Robert Harris, John L. Anglin, and George Collins who being elected tried and sworn the truth to speak upon the issue Joined upon their oath do say We the Jury find the defendant guilty and assess his fine to one cent. Therefore it is considered by the Court that the Commonwealth recover against the defendant the fine aforesaid in form aforesaid assessed and the costs in this behalf expended. On the motion of William J. Robertson & Isaac Adams, securities in the executorial bond given by Tamer McAlexander as exr. of Wm. McAlexander, it is ordered that the said Tamer McAlexander be summoned to appear here on the 1st day of September Court next to shew cause why she should not give counter security according to law as exr. aforesaid. Archibald Stuart is appointed a school commissioner in the place of Martin Cloud resigned. SEPTEMBER COURT (14 September 1843) Tamer McAlexander who was summoned to appear here at this Court and shew cause why she should not give counter security as executrix of William McAlexander decd. refused to give counter security and thereupon William J. Robertson is appointed administrator with the will annexed and thereupon he the said William J. Robertson having taken the oath prescribed by law and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of three thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs with E. F. Jefferson and D. B. Hatcher, his securities certificate of administration is granted him in due form according to law. Ordered that James Dillion be appointed a surveyor of the road in place of James Reynolds resigned and that the hands of said Reynolds be and they do hereby constitute the company of said Dillion. OCTOBER COURT (12 October 1843) An account of Harbert Shelton Jailor of this County for five dollars and ten cents was presented in Court examined allowed and ordered to be certified to the auditor of public accounts. Ordered that Moses Pilson be and he is hereby appointed a surveyor of the road in place of Joshua Harbour resigned and that the hands of said Harbour be and they do hereby constitute his company. Ordered that Thomas Vaughn be and he is hereby appointed a surveyor of the road in place of Roland Hurt resigned and that the hands of said Hurt be and they do hereby constitute his company. The last will and testament of Joseph Moles decd. was presented in Court proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded and thereupon Caty Moles the executrix therein named appeared in Court and having taken the oath prescribed by law and acknowledged a bond conditioned as the law directs in the sum of two hundred dollars has certificate of probat in due form according to law. NOVEMBER COURT (16 November 1843) ...a deed from David J. Ross to N. Staples Sheriff. Also a deed of Trust from Armstead Newman to George Wigginton Trustee for the benefit of Elam J. Newman.
