PATRICK COUNTY, VA - LETTERS - John G. Lee to Col. Staples, County Clerk, 21 Sep 1841 ----¤¤¤---- Note from John G. Lee to Col. Staples, County Clerk: "Sept 21st 1841 My esteemed Friend Col. Staples, I have sent up my son Peter for my license, agreeable to former arrangements made between you & my self. Dear Friend, I am to marry tomorrow evening. The company all invited, & some of my friends invited living the distance the distance of 100 miles, I look to see them this evening, I hope & flatter myself Col. that I shall have the license. I had a conversation with Mjr. Penn a few days ago on the subject and he told me he would aid me in everything he could. I told him that you told me you would issue my license, & he stated that you told him so, and he told me that he was highly gratifyd. I told him I was going to send up Peter the 1st day of the Court for my license, that it was your advice, I fully consented to it. Col. Staples, my highly esteemed friend I hope you will help me in this great & near & dear thing. I hope Mr. Taliaferro will aid me in giving his consent. My friend Col. Staples, I would not fail in obtaining my license for no sum, in reason. If I fail in my license, the matter will go down, my intended companion will not go to North Carolina to mary, believing it is contrary to Scripture(?) Col. Staples I will stand up to you in every respect on ___ ___ the issue of my license you shall not loose ___ ___ In consequence of ______ of _______, I will give a bond and security when I see you, in a sum sufficient to indemnify. In all respect, my dependence is on you, if Mr. Talliaferro decides against me, I hope you will be in my favor & grant the license, but I fell Col. Staples that Mr. Taliaferro is a justing(?) man and he will go for me for my case will go to the Legislature & I hope will get through in my favour, by the aid of my friends.
