Staples ***************************** No. 893 Treasury Department Third Auditors Office December 13th 1853 Sir Robert Sharp died in service 28th October 1814. His Widow, (name not stated) received Half pay pension under the Act, of 16 April 1816, at the rate of 4$ per month. She was paid by the Agent of the State of Virginia whose accounts were settled in the Second Auditors office. For payment by Agent see Settlement 6th August 1818. Respectfully Your Obt Servt. F. On this 28th day of November 1853 personally appeared before the county Court of Patrick of the state of Virginia Pena Sharp a resident of the Town of Taylorsville in the county of Patrick and state aforesaid aged eighty three years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the law of the United States issued 3d February 1853 that she is the widow of Robert Sharp who was a private in the seventh regiment of Virginia militia: that she was married to the said Robert Sharp on the 18th day of August in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety six; that her husband the aforesaid Robert Sharp died on the 28h day of November [sic] 1814 at Norfolk in consequences of Typhias fever and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof annexed. her Pena (+) Sharp mark Sworn to and subscribed before me Jesse Corn presiding Justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid in open court on the day and year above mentioned. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal of office at the clerks office of the said county court on the first day of November 1853 Henry Tuggle Clerk ***************************************************** State of Virginia County of Patrick SS On this the 11h day of [month of "November" is blotted or crossed out] AD 1853 personally appeared before me William Critz Jr. a Justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid Christopher Foley who being first duly sworn on his oath declares that he enlisted under Abram Penn a captain in the late war with Great Britain on or about the 1st day of August AD 1814, that he left the county of Patrick in the state aforesaid on the said 10th day of August 1814 that he was in the seventh regiment of Virginia militia commanded by one Saunders (whose name this affiant does not now recollect). That Robert Sharp enlisted on the same day in the same company, and that they the said Christopher Foley & Robert Sharp marched from the said county of Patrick to the town of Norfolk, that this affiant left Norfolk on the 7th day of October 1814 and that he left the said Robert Sharp in Norfolk in the hospital attending on the sick. He further declares that the said Robert Sharp never returned home and that it has been ever since been well understood that he (said Sharp) died at Norfolk while in the discharge of his duty. test his John T. W Critz Jr. J.P. ** State of Virginia County of Patrick SS On this the 11th day of November AD 1853 personally appeared before me William Critz Jr. a Justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid and date aforesaid Andrew Boyd who being first duly sworn, on his oath declares that on or about the 12t day of August 1814 he enlisted under Abram Penn a captain in the war with Great Britain declared by the United State in June 1812, that he marched from said county of Patrick in the state aforesaid on or about the said 12t day of August 1814 in company with Robert Sharp, to Norfolk, that the said Robert Sharp and the said Andrew Boyd were in the seventh regiment commanded by one Colo Saunders of Virginia militia, & that the said Robert Sharp died sometime in the month of November 1814, of a dissease contracted while in the service of the United States. W Critz Jr. J.P. ** State of Virginia County of Patrick SS On this 16th day of November AD 1853 personally appeared before me Silas Carter a Justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid Hannah Shelton who being first duly sworn according to law, on her oath declares, that she was present at the house of Eliphas Shelton her father when Pena Shelton now Pena Sharp (her sister) and Robert Sharp were married, that they were married in the said county of Patrick on the eighteenth day of August AD 1796 by one Isaac Adams a minister of the Gospel, that she the said Hannah Shelton was at that time about twenty nine years old, that she does not now recollect whether or not any private record of the marriage was kept by the family and that she knows of no such private record being now in existence. She further declares that Robert Sharp left the county of Patrick as a private in a company commanded by Captain Abrams Penn on or about the 10th day of August 1814 - that the said Robert never afterward returned to the county of Patrick and that she understood the said Robert Sharp died with typhus fever at Norfolk while in the service of the United State. She further declares that the said Pena Sharp has remained a widow ever since the death of her husband Robert Sharp Witness her Samuel G. I Henry Tuggle clerk of the county court in and for the county and state aforesaid do hereby certify that William Critz Jr. and Silas Carter whose genuine signatures appear above are & were at the time of signing the same Justices of the peace in and for the county aforesaid duly commissioned and sworn and that all their official acts as such are entitled to full faith and credit and that the aforesaid county court is a court of record having genuine Jurisdiction, and I do further certify that there is no record in my office of the marriage between Pena Sharp and Robert Sharp.
