"Nick" Martin 75 of the Fairystone State Park community of Patrick County died Thursday, October 16, 1997 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County after an illness. He was born on April 23, 1922 in the Puppy Creek section of Patrick County, the second son of the late Charlie Bishop Martin and Lila Elizabeth Bryant Martin. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Debbie) Shelton of Patrick Springs and Mrs. Gary (Susie) Easter also of Patrick Springs as well as his three grandchildren. He was also survived by a brother Amos Lee Martin of Stuart and Hallie Mae Martin Lawson also of Stuart. He was preceded in death by a brother Joseph Warren Martin. In December 1942 he entered the United States Air Force and eventually became a Sergeant serving during World War II and remained in the Air Force until 1946. After returning to civilian life, he married Shirley Lee Shelton in October, 1953. Soon thereafter they purchased a store on Route 57 from Charlie and Iowa Morrison near Fairystone State Park and he operated A.C. Martin's Grocery until his health would no longer allow it. Many of the residents in the community kept their vehicles filled with the Gulf gasoline that was personally pumped by him. It was the social hub of the community as many loggers traveled in and out of the store on a daily basis and you could also drink a cold Sun Drop while sitting on the Coke box with a bag of Planters peanuts with WMVA playing on the radio. The funeral will be conducted at 2 PM on Saturday, October 18 at the chapel at Moody Funeral Service in Stuart. The Elder L.J. Brammer and the Reverend Paul Estes will officiate. The burial will take place in the Foley-Rorrer Cemetery on Heidelbach School Road near the graves of both of his parents. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 PM until 9 PM at Moody Funeral Service and at other times at the home of Donna Thomas near the Martin home.
