March 14—Judge Turner Clement has set April 20 as the date on which he will hold a special term of the circuit court for the purpose of completing the unusually congested docket. The session just closed was one of the longest on record. The grand jury returned 97 indictments alleging violations of the state liquor law and three charging felonies, making a total of 100. The most of these being violations of court dealt with 48 cases altogether liquor law. The resulting condition is that the town jail is filled to over-flowing and seven prisoners have been taken to Martinsville there to be locked up because there is no room for them there. Fletcher Whitlock, charged with being an accomplice in the brutal murder of Ada Whaling, has been sentenced to serve twenty years in the penitentiary. For the actual murder, John Wagoner has been sentenced to a life term.
