He was born on the banks of Goblintown Creek on September 8, 1929, to the late Charles Bishop Martin and Lila Elizabeth Bryant Martin. He resided in the Fairystone State Park area of Patrick County for most of his life and had been active in the VFW post 7800 prior to his health issues. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Neva Sigmon Martin of the home. He is survived by three children: Anita Elgin and her husband Dwight of Woolwine, Jeffery and his wife Leslie Martin of Woolwine, and Ronald and his wife Cynthia Martin of Clemmons, NC. He is survived by five beloved grandchildren: Joshua Martin, Bradley Martin, Casey Elgin, Ashley Martin, and Kiley Martin. He is also survived by three beautiful great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Tyler Martin, LillyAnn Hope Martin, and Grayson Lee Martin. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Austin C. "Nick" Martin and Joseph Warren Martin, as well as a sister, Hallie Mae Martin Lawson. His early life began as many men during those years as he served honorably in the United States Army from 1951-1952 including a stint in Germany. After his tenure in the Army, he worked at several jobs locally until he found his true career passion at Philpott Dam-Corps of Engineers in Bassett as he began employment there on April 5, 1954. He always enjoyed his job with the Corps of Engineer and set an example for his family with tremendous work ethic. During those years, he became a diehard "Ford Man" as he proudly drove a Ford to work almost every day. Ultimately he retired from the Corps of Engineers on December 31, 1994 after a distinguished 42-year career. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, working in his yard, and watching Dale Jarrett behind the wheel of the #88 Robert Yates UPS Ford Taurus and then Carl Edwards piloting the #99 Roush Fenway Office Depot Ford Fusion until health issues ultimately forced him to the garage area. There will be a visitation beginning at 1 PM on Wednesday at Bassett Funeral Service and the funeral will follow at 2 PM. Interment will immediately follow at Ross Harbour United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, any donation or gift may be sent in his memory to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 18981 Jeb Stuart Hwy, Stuart, VA 24171 Additional Comments: This obituary appeared in the Martinsville Bulletin but was actually written by the submitter for the paper.
