The Enterprise, February 3, 1954
  Daniel Hillsman Wood 93, one of Patrick County’s most outstanding citizens, 
passed away at his home on the Fairystone Park Road on last Friday afternoon 
after an illness of several weeks.
  Mr. Wood was twice married.  His first wife was Malinda Ruth Corn, a daughter 
of the late Elder Peter Corn.  To this union was born four children:  Mrs. Della 
Wood Harger of the home and Mrs. P.C. Edwards of Iaeger, West Virginia, who 
survive and George Cleveland Wood and Mrs. Kate Wood Spencer both of whom died 
many years ago.   His second wife was Fannie Stovall, a daughter of the late 
Joseph and Permelia Corn Stovall.   Her death occurred in 1936.
  Other survivors include Mrs. Harger and Mrs. Edwards, are two brothers, 
Sparrel Asa Wood of Washington, D.C. and Jefferson Pinkard Wood of Floyd, 9 
grandchidlren and 8 great grandchildren.
  Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 PM at the Stuart Primitive Baptist 
Church of which he had been a member for the past 18 years.  Services were in 
charge of Elders Joel E. Marshall and D.P. Helms with music by the Stuart 
Baptist Church quartet.
  The body lay in state at the church for an hour preceding the service.   
Burial was in the family cemetery near the home.
  The many beautiful flowers and the large number present at the church and the 
graveyard were evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew 
him.
  Pallbearers were Judge John D. Hooker, Honorable W.L. Joyce. A.C. Turner, 
Murray E. Thompson, Fay Roberson and three grandsons G.C. Wood, D.C. Spencer, 
and G. Bruce Spencer.
  Mr. Wood was active in the uplifting of his community and in the schools of 
Patrick County, having served as trustee.   At the time of his death, he was a 
member of the Patrick County School Board trustee Electoral Board.
  Mr. Wood was keenly interested in the political affairs of the county and 
state.   He represented his county in the House of Delegates in 1908-1909 and 
was a former Commissioner of Revenue from Smith River District.  At the time of 
his death, he was a member of the Patrick County Democratic Committee and had 
formerly served as its chairman.  He had been a judge of elections for about 50 
years and served in this capacity at his precinct on his 93rd birthday last 
November 3.
  His many friends mourn the passing of this distinguished citizen who was so 
closely identified with Patrick County’s growth and development in which he 
played a major part.


Additional Comments:
  On April 14, 1881, he married Malinda Ann Corn, the daughter of the Elder 
Peter Corn and his wife Nancy Clementine Turner Corn.  They had four children 
together and in the prime of her life, she was struck down with scrofula which 
is cervical tuberculosis lymphadenitis.   She was laid to rest on a peaceful 
hill behind their home place in a cemetery that today is known as the Daniel H. 
Wood Cemetery.
  Before his first wife passed away, she picked out his second wife according to 
folklore, which happened to be her first cousin.  Two years later on April 24, 
1881, he married that lady who was 28 year old Judith Frances “Fannie” Stovall 
who was the daughter of Joseph Madison Stovall and Permelia Corn.   They did not 
have any kids.
  During this time, he became quite active in the Democratic Party in Patrick 
County and became a member of the Patrick County Democratic Committee and later 
served as chairman.  He served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1908 but 
did not run for reelection.  He was a judge of elections for about fifty years 
and was still serving on his 93rd birthday.   He was also a Justice of the 
Peace.
  He was also a Deacon at Stuart Primitive Baptist Church and wrote poems during 
the early part of the 20th century for “The Enterprise” a weekly newspaper in 
Patrick County that has been distributed for well over one hundred years.   He 
went by the pen name of Bradley.
  On January 30, 1936, Fannie passed away and was also buried in the same 
cemetery as his first wife.   
  During all of this, his oldest daughter Susan Audella “Della” Wood Harger 
returned home to take care of him in the final years of his life but by all 
accounts, he led an active life to the very end.  He passed away on January 22, 
1954 and was buried with both of his wives behind the home place.  
  It should be noted that in 1988, Ora Mae Pilson Hylton published a book named 
“Poems by Bradley (The Honorable Daniel Hillsman Wood) and The Fayerdale Story.
