This is the tombstone of Maynard and Dave Cox that were killed in a gun battle on 
February 6, 1927 at the home of John Chaney.   They were killed along with Turner 
Jack Hall who had been deputized to arrest the Cox brothers.  The event became 
known throughout the county as the Fayerdale tragedy which was the name of this 
long lost community with the building of Fairy Stone State Park as the lake now 
covers Fayerdale.  Also a rather sensational trial took place at the Patrick 
County Court House in Stuart, VA which saw both Ernest Shelton and Ora Turner 
acquitted of all charges.   This spawned a book written by Elmer Haynes called 
"The Fayerdale Tragedy" which covers the bizarre events surrounding this horrific 
event that affected so many families in the very small community.
