In Memory of The Patriots Who planned, upheld and Achieved The Independence of The United States of America 1775-1782 Erected by the Randolph Chapter D.A.R. Petersburg, Virginia 1903 Description of Memorial Windows in Old Blandford Church, Petersburg, Virginia. On entering the Western door to one’s right, may be seen the South Carolina Window, on the South wall of the church. Figure: St. Mark who suffered martyrdom about the end of the reign of Nero. In his hand he carries a roll of parchment. Inscription: To the Glory of God, and in memory of South Carolina’s sons who died for the Confederacy. He doeth according to his will in the Army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. Immediately opposite, on the north wall, is found the Alabama Window. Figure: St. Andrew. Among the first called by our Lord. The Cross on which he was crucified was made of two pieces of timber crossed in the middle, and upon this his body was tied with cords. This X shaped cross may be seen in the window, and it has ever been called the Cross of St. Andrew. Inscription: To the Glory of God and in sacred memory of Alabama’s brave Confederate Band. “Brave men may die Right has no death Truth never shall pass away.” Northern Window east end of church. Figure: St. James. He was the Bishop of Jerusalem and was beheaded by Herod, Agrippa. This figure holds in the palm of his hand a miniature church. Inscription: To the glory of God and in loving memory of Mississippians of the Confederacy who fell around Petersburg, Va. “For their Country they gave their lives. Greater love hath no man than this.” On the east side of the north wing of the church is found the Tennessee Window. Figure: St. Phillip, with his staff and open book in hand. Inscription: “To the Glory of God and in loving memory of our heroes of Tennessee.” “To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.” In the north gallery are two windows, not large enough for figures, but bearing respectfully the seals of Maryland and Arkansas. Each seal is encircled with a wreath of Myrtle. Inscriptions: “To the Glory of God and in memory of Arkansas soldiers who died for their State.”. Inscription: “To the glory of God and in loving memory of Maryland’s heroic sons.”. East end of church, window to left is that of Missouri. Figure: St. Peter with key in his hand. Sentenced by Nero and crucified. Inscription: Given by the Confederate Memorial Societies of Missouri “Qui Moriuntur pro jure nem quam moruntur fructra.” East end window to the right, is Virginia’s memorial. Figure: St. John, with loving cup in hand. The only apostle who escaped a violent death. Inscription: To the glory of God and in memory of Virginia Patriots and heroes of the Confederate Army. “Eternal right though all else fail, can never be made wrong”. On the south, to the left of the pulpit, is the Louisiana window, erected by the Washington Artillery of New Orleans. Figure: St. Peter, the Apostle to the Gentiles. A Roman citizen and beheaded by Nero. Inscription: “To the glory of God and in memory of those brave men of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Louisiana, who gave their lives for the Confederate cause. To the right of the pulpit is seen the North Carolina Window. Figure: St. Bartholomew, also called Nathaniel. In his right hand he holds a knife. He was flayed alive and then crucified. Inscription: In memory of North Carolina’s Soldiers of whom 40,275 proved their devotion to duty by their death. “God bless North Carolina. R.E. Lee.” The transform over the West door, main entrance to the church is a simple memorial to the brave, noble women of the sixties, who gathered the bodies of our slain and gave them a resting place in Old Blandford Cemetery. Far above the transom is a small window which has been devoted to the Tiffany Cross of Jewels, bearing the inscription: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace good will toward men.” This Poem was written of the walls in 1841 Supposed to have been composed by Tyrone Power, an Irish comedian of Waterford, Ireland. “Thou are crumbling to the dust old pile, Thou are crumbling to thy fall; And round thee in thy loneliness Clings the ivy to the wall; The worshippers are scattered now Who knelt before thy shrine, And silence reigns where Anthems rose In the days of “Auld Lang Syne.” And sadly sigh the wandering wind Where off in years gone by Prayer rose from many hearts to him, The Highest of the High. The tramp of many a busy foot That sought the Aisles of o’er And many a weary heart around Is still forever more. How doth Ambitions hope take wing! How droops the spirit now! He hears the distant City’s din; The dead are mute below. The sun that shines upon their paths Now gilds their lonely graves The zephyrs which once fanned their brows The grass upon them waves. Oh! could we call the men back Who’ve gathered here in vain Who’ve careless roved where we do now Who’ll never meet again; How would our hearts be stirred, To meet the earnest gaze Of the lovely and the beautiful The light of others days.” Here lyeth the body of Theophilus Field One of the founders of Blandford Church He served continuously as a vestryman of Bristol Parish From 1729 until his death in 1775 Gen.
