Manley (Will Book 1, page 253, Petersburg,VA.) In Gods Holy Name Amen. I Devereux J.Manley being in my reason & senses do make & ordain this & none other to be my true and only last Will and Testament that is to say Imprimis- With respect to my Temporal and Worldly Estate I in the first place, I will, wish, and devise that my Executors do pay all my just Debts as soon as my Estate will admit of the same being done with convenience to my Family.- Item. I Give, Bequeath, and Devise to my wife Elizabeth till my son Robert arrives to full age say Twenty One years, all and every part of my Estate both real & personal to enable her to maintain, support and Educate my said Child Robert, and any other Child she may have or bear or be now pregnant with- After my said Son Robert arrives to full age I give and Devise to him my said son a moiety or one half part of my Estate both real & personal, moveable & immoveable and the other half thereof to my said wife for and during her natural life, and at her death, the said half given & Devised to her, I Give and Devise to the Child she may bear of be pregnant with, should she have one, and if none, I in that case Give & Devise the said last mentioned half of my said Estate to my said Son Robert to him, his Heirs and assigns for ever, as well as all the other half of my said Estate- Notwithstanding the foregoing will or any Legal construction thereupon, I Give and Bequeath to my Brother Melchez'k, to my Brother Richard, Sally Crittleton & Frances Jolly each the sum of Ten Pounds to be paid to them or their representatives respectively, so soon as my Estate will admit. In case of the death of my son Robert before he arrives to full age, I then Give Bequeath and Devise the whole of my Estate of every sort to be equally & alike Divided between my Brothers & Sisters and the children of my Friend Joseph Badger share & share equally alike. In case of my death I wish my Bargain with John Baird Jr. for the hire of chrles. to cease, and Lastly I do appoint my wife & my Friend Joseph Badger my Extrix. & Extor. of this my said last Will. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 3rd day of April 1797. The last Will & Testament of Devereux J.Manley deceased was presented in Court by Joseph Badger the Executor therein named, and was proved by the oaths of John Baird Jr. and Ludson Parkinson two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. And on the Motion of the said Executor who made oath and together with Thomas Stroud his security entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of Twelve hundred pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said Will in due form, Liberty being reserved for the Executrix named in the said will to join in the probat when she shall think fit. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Elizabeth Reeves (Will Book 1, page 254, Petersburg,VA.) I Elizabeth Reeves of the Town of Petersburg being weak in Body but sound in judgement and being of opinion that I am drawing near my departure of this world- I commit my Soul to God who gave it; and all my worldly effects I will & bequeath as follows viz: I Give and bequeath to my son Archibald McNeil Thirty Two Pounds one shilling & Ten Pence lawful money of Virginia due upon Note by Richard Covington & Thomas Dent, likewise a mouse coloured Mare worth fourteen pounds- I likewise give and bequeath to my said son Arch'd. Three feather Beds & furniture, two bedsteads six green chairs, one Sett Tea China, One half doz'n. Silver Tea Spoons , One Gold ring, one chest of drawers, one Trunk & one table; All which Articles thus bequeathed are to be applied to his my said sons particular use at the discretion of his Father or Guardian untill he is of age. Item. I likewise give and bequeath to my sister Mary Smith one Gold ring; also one Feather Bed & furniture for her particular use until my son Arch'd. is Seventen years of age, at which time it is to be returned to him my said son.- Item, I give and bequeath to my Mother and sister Mary all my wearing apparel to be equally divided between them.- I likewise will that on death of my son Arch'd. that all and every of the above articles thus bequeathed to him shall devolve unto my Mother Martha Reeves and Mr.Hector McNeil to be equally divided between them. Betsy Rives Test. W.MacKay Hector McNeil At A Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 3rd Day of July 1797. The last Will and Testament of Betsy Rives deceased was presented in court by Hector McNeill and was proved by the oaths of William MacKay and Hector McNeill Witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of George Nebeker (Will Book 1, page 255, Petersburg,VA.) In the Name of God Amen. I George Nebeker of the Town of Petersburg, being in my perfect senses mind & memory (Praised be to God) do give & dispose of all my worldly Goods in manner & form following viz.- Imprimis, I give & bequeath unto my mother Mariah Justice the sum of Fifty Pounds current money of Virginia, to her own use & disposal.- Item. I give and bequeath unto my Nephew George Nebeker (son of my Brother John) the sum of Two Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia & my Gold Watch to him his heirs & assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Sister Nancy Robertson the sum of Fifty Pounds current money of Virginia to her, her Heirs & assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Brother Martin Nebeker the sum of Fifty Pounds current money of Virginia,to him,his Heirs and assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Brother Henry Nebeker the sum of One Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia, to him, his Heirs and assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Brother William Nebeker the sum of One Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia, likewise all my wearing apparel and my Silver Watch. To him his Heirs and assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Brother Lucas Nebeker One Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia to him his Heirs and assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Sister Elizabeth Stedman the sum of Fifty Pounds current money of Virginia to her, her Heirs & assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my Brother Hance Nebeker, the sum of One Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia to him, his heirs & assigns forever.- Item. I give & bequeath unto the children of my late Sister Mary Springer, the sum of One Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia to be paid by my Executor into the hands of my Brother John Nebeker, and by him to be kept at interest or any other way he may approve of, untill the youngest of the said children shall arrive to lawful age, & then to be equally divided amongst them or their survivors, to them & each of them, their Heirs & assigns forever.- Item. My Will & desire is that my Negro man Samuel be hence emancipated from slavery, I therefore leave him entirely free from all servitude or claim, of any person or persons whatever.- Item. All the residue & remaining part of my Estate both real & personal, after all my lawful Debts and funeral Expences are paid, I give & bequeath to be equally divided amongst all my Brothers & Sisters now living, namely John, Martin, Henry, William, Lucas,& Hance Nebeker, Nancy Robertson, & Elizabeth Stedman, to them & each of them their Heirs & assigns forever.- Lastly. I appoint & Ordain John G.Woolfolk, my said Brother William Nebeker & Edward Goode to be Executors to this my Last Will & Testament; In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand & seal this thirtieth day of May One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Seven. At a Quarter Session Court Continued & held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Tuesday the 8th day of August 1797- The Last Will & Testament of George Nebeker dec'd. was proved in open court by the oaths of William Colvin, James Williams & Wm.Clarke three of the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded, AND on the motion of Wm.Nebeker one of the Executors therein named who made oath & together with James Williams his security, entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of Two Thousand Pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form, liberty being reserved for the other Executors named in the said will to join in the probat where they shall think fit. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Stephen Gilbert (Will Book 1, page 256, Petersburg,VA.) In the Name of God Amen. I Stephen Gilbert of the County of Prince George and parish of Bristol being very sick & weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, do make and ordain this my Last Will & Testament in manner & form following to wit; Imprimis I give & bequeath unto my Dear beloved Daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert, Six Hundred Pounds current money of Virginia delivered in the hands of my Executors & to be kept for my loving daughter by my Executors untill she comes of age or marries. Item. I give & bequeath unto my loving daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert one Lot and the Houses belonging to the said Lot lying & being on the main street in the Town of Blandford and County aforesaid, which said Houses & lot I purchased of Mr.Robert Evans of the Town of Petersburg and have rented them for this year to Mr.Anthony Separdo who at the expiration of the year will give them up to my Executors and I wish and desire my Executors to rent out the said Houses & lot from the time they take possession of them untill my loving daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert comes of age or marries that is to say I would wish the said Houses & lot to be rented from year to year untill the time aforesaid and the Rents to be received by my Executors yearly and to be converted by them to the use of Educating maintaining & clothing of my dear & loving Daughter untill she comes of age or marries.- Item. I also wish & desire my Executors directly after my death to set up & sell my vessel which is a Sloop called The Willing Maid of Petersburg to the highest bidder for ready cash and the said money arising from the sale of the said Sloop called The Willing Maid of Petersburg to be laid up by my Executors for my dear & loving daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert untill she comes of age or marries.- Item. It is my will and desire that my Negro man by the name of Nepton may be Emancipated and set free according to the laws of this County after his paying my Executors thirty pounds which he is to make & pay as soon as he can and as soon as my Executors receives payment of Thirty Pounds from my said Negro man Nepton it is my will and desire that my Executor shall set him free according to law as aforesaid, and the said sum of thirty pounds to be laid up as aforesaid for my loving daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert. Item. It is further my will and desire that all the merchandise which I have on my hands or in my storeroom shall be set up at publick vendue & sold by my Executors and the money thence arising from the sale of the said merchandise to be laid up as aforesaid by my Executors for my dear & loving Daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert. Item. I give unto my loving Nephew Byns Gilbert One Gold Watch to him & his heirs forever. Item. If my dear and loving daughter Polly Wheaton Gilbert should die before she comes of age or marries or without an heir lawfully begotten of her Body, then it is my will & desire that all my Estate should be equally divided among my loving Brother Henry Gilbert's children and their heirs forever.- Item. I do constitute & appoint my loving Brother Henry Gilbert and my affectionate Nephew Byns Gilbert Executors to this my Last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my and affixed my Seal this Fourteenth day of May in the of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Seven. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 4th day of September 1797. The Last Will & Testament of Stephen Gilbert dec'd. was presented in court by Henry Gilbert one of the Executors therein named and was proved by the oaths of David McKittrick & Wm.Jones two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.- AND at a Hustings Court continued & held for the said Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Tuesday the 5th day of September 1797 on the motion of the said Executor who made oath and together with Hector McNeill & Wm.Gilbert his securities entered into & acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of Two Thousand Pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form, Liberty being reserved for the other Executor named in the said will to join in the probat when he shall think fit. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Thomas Livingston (Will Book 1, page 265, Petersburg,VA.) In the Name of God Amen, I Thomas Livingston of the County of Dinwiddie & Corporation of Petersburg being sick and weak, altho sound in mind, do hereby ordain this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all my former wills. I give and bequeath my Soul to God, through his mercy, in our Savior Jesus Christ our Lord, and after my decease, I desire that my Body may be decently buried, And that all my just debts be paid.- Item. I have a house & Lot in the County of Nancemond, in the Town of Suffolk, likewise my Guard Wages as Guard on the criminals in the district Gaol of Petersburg, likewise all my worldly Goods or Legacies whatever I give and bequeath unto Robert Armistead to him and his Heirs forever. I likewise appoint and constitute Robert Armist'd my Executor of this my Last Will and Testament, as witness my hand & seal this 18th day of January One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 2d day of April 1798.- The Last will & Testament of Thomas Livingston dec'd. was presented in Court by Robert Armistead the Executor therein named and proved by the oaths of John Blaikley and John Peterson two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of the said Executor who made oath and together with John Blaikly his security entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of One Hundred and Fifty Pounds, as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form.- Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of John Parke (Will Book 1, Page 265, Petersburg,VA.) In the Name of God Amen. I John Parke of Petersburg do make this my Last Will and Testament, that after all my just debts are paid, to do which I make my Estate liable,I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Parke one moiety of all my personal estate, and also one moiety of my real estate for her natural life.- I give the other moiety of my estate both real and personal to the child my said wife is supposed to be pregnant with,to the child and its heirs forever. But if my said wife should not prove with child, then and in that case,I give unto my said wife, all the real estate for her natural life (except the room occupied by my Sister Nichols which I give unto my said Sister for her life) and after the natural life, that is to say my wife Mary's natural life, I give my real estate to the oldest Son of my brother William Parke, of the State of Virginia.- My will and desire is that all my personal estate, of what kind soever, my wife is to have and enjoy without control and being accountable to any one whatsoever.- I appoint my wife Mary and William Harrison Executors of this my Last Will and Testament as witness my hand and seal this Twenty Fifth day of August One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight.- John Parke (Seal) Signed, Sealed and delivered in the presence of} Philip Taliaferro, Fred'k.Ragsdale, W. Harrison. At a Hustings Court continued and held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town, Tuesday the fourth day of September 1798. The Last Will and testament of John Parke dec'd. was presented into Court by Mary Parke one of the Executors therein named and the same being proved by the oaths of Fred'k.Ragsdale and W.Harrison two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded.- And upon the motion of the said Mary who having made oath thereto, Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probat thereof in due form, whereupon she together with William Stainback her security entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of four hundred and fifty pounds conditioned as the Law directs.- The other executor therein named in open Court refused to take upon himself the burthen of the execution thereof. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of James Brown (Will Book 1, Page 273, Petersburg,VA.) In the name of God Amen. I James Brown of the Town of Petersburg being sick and weak, tho' of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following Viz. First I give my Soul to God who gave it to me in certain hopes of his mercy at the day of Resurrection and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be decently buried by my executor hereafter named, and what worldly goods it hath pleased God to bless me with I give and dispose of the same in the following manner.- It is my will and desire that after my Debts are paid that my brother Frank Brown's two sons, William and Miles do have and possess all the remainder of my Estate of every kind whatever.- I likewise appoint Mr. John Grammer my Executor of this my Last Will and Testament.- Signed with my hand and sealed with my seal this twenty third day of August one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight. James Brown (Seal) Signed Sealed delivered in presence of Daniel Dodson, Edward H.Hasson, William Pollard. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the first day of October 1798.- The Last Will and Testament of James Brown deceased was presented into Court, and the same was proved by the oaths of Daniel Dodson and Edward H.Hasson two of the witnesses thereto and was ordered to be recorded. And John Grammer the Executor therein named refusing to take upon himself the burthen of the Execution thereof.- On the motion of James Knox who made oath and together with John Wilder his security entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of six hundred pounds, conditioned as the law directs,Certificate is granted him for obtaining letter of administration of the said decedents Estate, with his said will annexed in due form. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Edward Willcox (Will Book 1, page 274, Petersburg,VA.) In the Name of God Amen I Edward Willcox of Dinwiddie County being weak of body but of sound mind and memory do make & ordain this my Last Will and Testament.- Imprimis. I give unto my mother Hannah Willcox during her natural life, all my estate both real and personal and after her Death to be equally divided between my Brothers Littleberry,Hamlin,John,Thomas, and Major Willcox, to them their heirs and assigns forever.- I do Hereby appoint my Brothers Hamlin and Littleberry Willcox executors to this my Last Will & Testament. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 3rd day of December 1798. The Last Will and Testament of Edward Willcox dece'd. was presented in Court by Hamlin Willcox one of the Exor's. therein named & was proved by the oath of John R.Brewer one of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of the said Executor, who made oath and together with James Cumming and Hugh Johnston his securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the penalty of Eight Hundred Pounds, as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said will in due form, liberty being reserved for the other Exor. named in the said will to join in probat when he shall think fit. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Elenor(Man)(Lynch)Roberts (Will Book 1, page 274, Petersburg,VA.) In the name of God Amen. I Elenor Man (late Elenor Lynch, now Elenor Roberts) being sound in mind but weak in body & considering myself as drawing near my departure from this life, do resign my soul to the God that gave it, and dispose of my worldly Effects as follows viz; Whereas a Divident has been made between my husband Wm.Roberts & I by mutual consent I bequeath to my nephew William Young all my moiety of the Houses & Lotts so divided as above (& particularly specified in articles drawn for that purpose now in the hands of Wm.Prentis Mayor) to him his heirs forever.Provided that if either Lawful son or daughter to my Brother Andrew Man should come to this Country & demand it, that they or either of them as may be, shall be intitled to one half of said property so bequeathed to Wm.Young to him & his heirs forever.- Item. I will that all my Household & Kitchen furniture and my wearing apparel shall be sold and out of the proceeds of said sale that my lawful debts be paid & the remainder for the particular use of my nephew Wm.Young for the purpose of clothing & educating him.- Item. I give & bequeath unto my particular friend Mrs.Mary Smith my Silver Watch.- And I will that Robert Moore, Hector McNeil and William Prentis (all of this Town) be Executors of this my Last Will & Testament all or either of them to act as appears to them or him most benificial the Estate & to the Heir.- Given under my hand this Sixth day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Eight. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the third day of December 1798. The Last Will and Testament of Elenor Roberts dece'd. was proved by the oaths of William Mackay and Nicholas Egan two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of John Thomson (Will Book 1, Page 276, Petersburg,VA.) February Court 1799. The Will of John Thomson.- I direct that the Bills of exchange now in the house shall be sent to my brother William as soon as possible.- I direct that my real estate shall be a fund in the hands of my executor for the purpose of maintaining my brother in Europe as long as he chooses to remain there this fund to be made productive either by renting or sale, as circumstances require. I devise to Charles Hay my little boy Davy. I devise to George Hay such of my books as he may choose, and the residue to Bolling Robertson.- The other slaves in my possession will remain together untill my brothers return from Europe.- At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 4th day of February 1799.- George Hay presented in Court a certain writing purporting to be the Will of John Thomson dece'd. and the said George Hay in open Court Renounced all claim benefit & interest he might have in the said will, and there being no name subscribed to the said writing, George Hay being sworn deposed that on the Tuesday preceding the death of the said Thomson which happened on the night of Thursday the 25th day of January last, he was requested by the said Thomson to write his will. That in pursuance of this request he sat down by his bedside and wrote at his desire the words contained in the paper now offered to the Court that when he had finished the last sentence, he was told by the said Thomson that "that would do", the said Thomson then received the paper from the hands of the deponent, read it over and attempted to sign it; that the said Thomson made the mark in the form of an J at the bottom of the writing but finding himself too weak returned the paper to the deponent and said that he would complete the signature at a future time which however he did not. Whereupon the said writing is established by the Court as the Last Will & Testament of the said John Thomson dece'd. and is ordered to be recorded.- And on the motion of Robert Massenburg who made oath and together with Ashley Adams his security entered into and acknowledged Bond in the penalty of One Thousand Pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of administration on the said decedants Estate with his will aforesaid annexed in due form. Attest. J.Grammer C.H.C. Will of Richard (Stuart) Stewart (Will Book 1, page 277, Petersburg VA.) In the name of God Amen, I Richard (Stuart crossed out) Stewart of the Town of Petersburg & State of Virginia reflecting on the uncertainty of life and the propriety of being always prepared for such an event, being at present in perfect health and sound mind give and bequeath my property & Estate in the following manner that is to say First it is my will and desire that the whole of my Estate of every denomination both real and personal be subject and liable to the true & complete payment of all my just and lawful debts.- Secondly my will and desire is that whatever of my estate is left after the payment of my debts shall be equally divided in two parts one of which parts I give devise and bequeath to my Sister Jane Stuart daughter of James Stewart of the County of Armagh in the Kingdom of Ireland to be paid and delivered to her when she attains the age of Eighteen Years or marriage and the other part I give devise and bequeath to my Sister Nancy Stewart of the same place to be paid and delivered to her when she arrives at the age of Eighteen years or marriage all which I give to each of them and their Heirs forever. But it is my will and desire that if either of my said Sisters should die before her eighteenth year of age or marriage that then and in that case the surviving Sister shall have possess and enjoy that part which the deceased Sister would have to her and her heirs forever.- Thirdly it is my will and desire that a Mulatto Girl Eliza now in my possession and whom I bought from the Administrator of Francis Brown dece'd. should enjoy her freedom & I hereby emancipate & set her free from Bondage and also any issue or children she may have she and they to possess their full and complete freedom as amply as any free person can do & should this clause of my will be in anywise defective for that purpose my desire is that my Executors hereafter named shall execute such instruments of writing as will carry this part of my will into complete effect.- Lastly I nominate and appoint my worthy and respected Friends Robert Moore also William Douglass my Executors of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other wills codicils and other papers of this nature heretofore executed by me given under my hand and seal this 3rd day of January 1797. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the fourth day of February 1799.- The Last Will and Testament of Richard Stuart dece'd. was proved by the oaths of James Byrne and Michael Ternan two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded, and Robert Moore and William Douglass the Executors named in the said will having previously refused to under take the execution thereof, on the motion of John Bell who made oath and together with James Cumming & Hugh Johnston his securities entered into and acknowledged Bond in the penalty of Five Hundred Pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration of the said decedants estate with his will aforesaid annexed in due form. I John Williams of Petersburg Virginia at present enjoying a sound state of mind do appoint and ordain this my Last Will and Testament and desire that the same shall be considered as such hereby revoking all others which may have been made.- First- I recommend my Soul to God.- Secondly- I do hereby leave to my dear Brothers Nathan Williams and James Williams of Kentucky all and every part of my Estate both real personal and mixed to have & enjoy as tenants in common share & share alike after all my legal debts are paid off. Thirdly- I do hereby constitute and appoint my worthy Friends Gregory Johnston and Armstead Hill of Petersburg Executors of this my Last Will and Testament and request that they return the several packages of goods lately purchased in Baltimore to the several persons of whom purchased at my cost and charges and as payment for the same, and after paying off all my just & legal debts pay the balance of my Estate as before mentioned to Nathan Williams and James Williams or either of them to be equally divided between them. An Authentick copy of the Last Will & Testament of John Williams deceased, together with the testimonial of the Register of Wills for the County of Baltimore thereto annexed were presented in Court by Gregorie Johnston one of the Excutors named in the said Will and are ordered to be recorded.- And on the motion of the said Executor who made oath and together with Wood Tucker & John Galle his securities entered into and acknowledged Bond in the penalty of Four Thousand Pounds as the law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat of the said Will in due form. I David Vaughan of the Town of Petersburg and Dinwiddie County & parish of Bristol being of sound mind and disposing memory thanks be to God and knowing it is appointed for all men to die do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament in manner as followeth viz. First I give and bequeath my soul to god who gave it and my Body to the Earth from whence it was taken, to be buried according to the direction of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as for my worldly Goods which it hath pleased God to bless me with after my just debts are paid I give and dispose of in manner as followeth that is to say- Item....I give and bequeath unto my son James Vaughan my Tract of Land on Ready Run,containing one Hundred and three acres to him & his heirs forever. Item....I give and bequeath unto my son Spencer C.Vaughan ten shillings to him & his heirs forever. Item....I give and bequeath to my son Jeremiah Vaughan my Tract of Land at White Oake containing Four Hundred and Twenty Seven Acres to him & his heirs forever. Item....I give and bequeath to my son David Vaughan my Lott of land in Gillfield containing nearly Three Acres to him and his Heirs forever. All the rest of my Estate both real & personal I lend to my wife Winnefred Vaughan during her life or widdohood and after the death or widdohood of my wife I give & bequeath unto my son Daniel Vaughan my Teniment in Ravenscroft whereon I now live containing better than three acres with the improvements to him & his heirs forever. I also after the death or widowhood of my wife, I give & bequeath unto my son David Vaughan one Negro man named Ben to him and his Heirs forever.- All the rest of my Estate lent to my wife during her natural life or widowhood I give & bequeath to my children that is to say Susannah Hermon, Nancy Harrison, Elizabeth Tarpley, David Vaughan, Polly C. Vaughan, Gency Vaughan, and Daniel Vaughan to be equally divided after bringing in what each of my children received when married or may be married before mine or my wife's lifetime. What any of my children may have received before a division to be as so much of their equal part in the division with the other children to them and their heirs forever.- Lastly I constitute and appoint John Crawford, John Anderson and Henry Rees of County of Dinwiddie Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. A severe thunderstorm coming on and being under apprehensions or rather knowing how we are exposed to such accidents I hereby make this my Last Will and Testament which in the perfect use of of my senses I ordain to be such-viz.- In consideration of the great love I bear toward my good & faithful wife Mary Parker, and in justice to her fondness & decided attachment to me for nearly eight years since I have been happily united to her I do hereby without the least reserve, & meaning this my last will to be taken as fully & comprehensively as if drawn up by a lawyer or as if perfectly in the usual form of a will,give and bequeath unto my said beloved wife Mary all and every part of my Estate real, personal and of every other kind & description if any such there is, and also all that may hereafter come to me from any quarter or in any way whatsoever, to be at her own disposal & to her own use and under the control of no other person whatever, in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 25th May 1798.- El's. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg in the Courthouse of the Said Town Monday the Seventh day of April 1800.- The Last Will & Testament of Elias Parker dece'd. was presented in Court, and there being no witnesses to the said will, Duncan Rose and Philip Haxal being sworn severally deposed that they are well acquainted with the testators hand writing and verily believe that the said will and the name thereto subscribed are all of the said testators own proper handwriting whereupon the said will is ordered to be recorded. Mr.William Haxall having consented to administer on the Estate of my deceased husband Elias Parker, I do hereby relinquish all my right or claim which might or could arise under the will of my said deceased husband, or otherwise, to the said administration to the said Mr. William Haxall. In the name of God Amen- I John Maben of Petersburg in the Commonwealth of Virginia being of sound mind & perfectly in my senses, though weak in body, do make & publish this my Last Will & Testament in manner & form following. First I desire all my just debts to be paid & for that purpose I subject all my Estate of every kind & nature whatsoever.- Secondly- I give desire & bequeath to my brother Matthew Maben of Petersburg all my Estate both real & personal, subject however to the payment of the following legacies before he enjoys it, that is to say, I give in the third place two thousand pounds to my brother David Maben of New York- I give three hundred pounds to my son Robert Maben in Scotland- & I also devise & require that he may be boarded cloathed & educated by & at the expense of my Estate- Fourthly, I give & bequeath the sum of Thirty Six Pounds to my mother annually & every year during her natural life, to be remitted to her regularly every year by my executor herein after mentioned- Lastly I appoint & nominate my brother Matthew Maben sole executor of this my Last Will & Testament.(in all the foregoing legacies I mean current money of Virginia) In testimony whereof I have made & published this as my only & true Testament and Last Will on this sixth day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred. In the name of God Amen, I Boswell Goodwyn of the Town of Petersburg and State of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory, do constitute this my Last Will and Testament.- Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my wife Peggy Goodwyn, my pair of bay Horses, & Carriage,two milch cows,all my Household & Kitchen furniture of every kind & description whatever, the balance of an account due from Robert Hines to me which will appear on a settlement hereafter to be made, and also the amount of a debt due from General Joseph Jones to me as & bond now in the hands of Mr.R.Hines for collection, to her and her heirs forever.- In confirmation of the foregoing devise and hereby revoking all wills & devises heretofore made by me, have this thirty first day of July one thousand and Eight hundred affixed my hand & seal. I David McAtrick of the Town of Petersburg being sound in mind but weak in Body & conceiving that my final end is approaching, do commit my soul to the God who gave it, and will & bequeath my property of all kinds whatsoever as follows viz. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Anne McKatrick late Anne Walker and John McKatrick my only son, all my property real & personal of every kind and discription whatsoever, consisting of a lott with improvements in Pocahuntas, designated by the number fifteen (15), all my Right and Title in the house I now occupy, with all the goods, Chattells, furniture, money, and property of every kind whatsoever, to be equally the property of my said wife & son them and their heirs forever.- Item. The Last Will and Testament of David McKittrick dece'd. was proved by the oath of William Mackay one of the witnesses thereto and the same having been before proved by the oath of Benjamin Cook the other witness thereto, is ordered to be recorded.- And on the motion of Anne McKittrick,Widow & relict of the said David,who made oath and together with William Mackay and Benjamin Cook her securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of two thousand dollars, as the law directs, Certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of administration of the said David McKittrick dece'd. with said will annexed in due form.- Attest. In the name of Almighty God Amen, I John Lee of the Town of Petersburg being deeply impress'd with the thoughts of the uncertainty of life have made this my Last Will and Testament.- Item- I give to my Fathers negro woman Beck Ten Dollars, in consequence of her having nursed & taken care of me when I was a child.- Item- I bequeath to my Brother Jesse Lee all my Libery of Books, as he is most likely to make a good use of them. & to my Brother Edward Lee I give fifty pounds in consequence of his Singular care of me in my affliction. & to my Brother Adam Lee I give the Debt he owes me. I wish all my Debts to be punctually paid (which are but three in all I believe, one for about fifty one shillings,on my memorandum book, which I hope I shall settle in a few days, another to my brother Jesse Lee who has my note, & the third and last to David Bassett, who I believe lived formerly in Salem New Jersey, of thirteen pounds which would have been paid long ago had I known who to have paid it to, I have not heard of Bassett for near 7 years & can't tell what has become of him). After my Debts and the above Legacies are paid, my disire is that the balance of my Estate, whatever it may be, should be equally divided between my Brothers Jesse Lee, Edward Lee, Nathaniel Lee, Abraham Lee and my sister Nancy Perkins, one fifth part to each of them and I appoint my trusty and well beloved Friends Edward Lee & James Pirkins Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. I Robert Armistead of the Town of Petersburg and County of Dinwiddie considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being sick and weak at present, but thanks be to God of sound mind, sense & memory, do make and publish this as my Last Will and Testament, in manner and form following, that is to say.- First, I direct that all my just debts and Funeral Expences be expeditiously and honorably paid by my Executors hereafter named.- Secondly- I lend to my beloved wife Margaret during her natural life the dwelling house now occupied by Mr.John Wilder, together with the land & appurtenances thereunto belonging, together with the following Negroes to wit, Phebe, Rose, Lucy and Nancy and a boy Sam, and all my household furniture that I shall be possessed of at the time of my decease, except that held by Mr.Edward Worsham under my Lease of the Tavern etc. to him.- And at the decease of my said wife, it is my desire that the said dwelling house and appurtenances should be sold by my Executors, either at publick or private sale as they may think best, together with what remain of the said furniture and Negroes. And the money arising from the same should be divided equally between my children, and if either of my children should die before my said wife in that case their respective proportions to go to those claiming under them. Thirdly- It is my will and desire that all the remaining part of my Estate both real & personal, except the Tavern & appurtenances thereunto belonging together with the Furniture and negroes, which I have leased to Mr.Edward Worsham, should be sold at publick sale, and the money arising therefrom together with all my Book debts, bonds etc. which remain after the payment of my just debts, should be equally divided between my beloved wife and my children. It is also my desire that the rent arising from the said Tavern shall also be divided between my wife and my children after the payment of the balance of a Debt due to the Estate of Mr.John Tabb, deceased, for which purpose I have vested the same in the hands of trustees by deed recorded in the Hustings Court of the Town of Petersburg, and such other debts as may then remain unpaid and at the expiration of the said lease of the Tavern and other property, as before mentioned, it is my desire that the Tavern and houses thereunto belonging should be sold by my Executors either at publick or private sale, as they may think best together with the furniture and negroes which I have leased with the Tavern, and the money arising therefrom should be equally divided between my wife and children,and if either should die before Expiration of said lease then their respective proportions to go to those claiming under them. Fourthly- It is my desire that out of my daughter Euphan's proportion of my Estate should be deducted the value of a Negro Girl named Jenny at whatever she may be appraised, and that the said Negro Girl should remain as her property forever.- Fiftly- It is my desire that out of my daughter Polly's proportion of my Estate should be deducted the value of a Negro Girl named Sylvia, at whatever she may be appraised, and that the said Negro Girl should remain as her property forever.- Sixthly- It is my desire that out of my son Harry's proportion of my Estate should be deducted the value of a Negro boy named Daniel at whatever he may be appraised, and that the said negro boy should as his property forever.- And lastly I do hereby appoint my beloved wife Executrix, and John Grammer, John Wilder and William Prentis Executors of this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other wills by me made.- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the fourteenth day of April in the year of our Lord 1802. I give to my loving wife Mar__ all my Estate in Petersburg and elsewhere moveable and immoveable during her life, after death I give to Nancy Pritchett my Estate, except three pieces of furniture which I give to Mary Gordon, one black walnut chest of Drawers, one small cupboard & one dressing glass. It is my wish and desire that my loving wife have the care of Nancy Pritchett so long as she may see cause to part with her, should my wife die while having the care of Nancy Pritchett, it is my wish my Executor hereafter mentioned may have the care of her, should my wife and Nancy both depart this life without enjoying my Estate, I give my Estate to my relation John Buchanan to him & his heirs forever. It is my will & desire that the heirs of Nancy Pritchett inherit no part of my Estate without being lawfully begotten of her body. I Margaret Tabb Moss at present residing in the Town of Petersburg being perfectly sound in mind & memory, but considerably reduced in health and body, from long indisposition, and being well aware of the uncertainty of human life, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner following- I give and bequeath to my sisters Nancy Moss,Dianah Moss,and Lucy Moss and to my friend and relation Mrs.Mary Claussel, the whole of my Estate of whatever discription or denomination, together with a legacy left me by my uncle Henry Allen, deceased, which was received by my father Shelden Moss but never by him paid to me, otherwise than by a promise that I should keep as my own property a negro girl by the name of Pinah, in consideration thereof and if the said negro girl should be permitted to remain and be confirmed as the property of my said sisters Nancy, Dinah and Lucy, and my friend relation Mrs.Mary Claussel it is my desire that the said Legacy may be considered as discharged thereby. In the name of God Amen, I Robert Moore of the Town of Petersburg and State of Virginia, being of sound mind and perfect memory do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following Viz. I give and bequeath unto my son Archibald Moore all my landed estate, also all my Houses, Lotts etc. of whatsoever discription, together with my two Negroes Sam and Lydia. At a Hustings Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said Town Monday the 3rd day of December 1804.- The Last Will and Testament of Robert Moore dece'd. was presented in Court by William Bowden one of the executors therein named. And Drury Burge and Benjamin H.Hicks being sworn in open Court severally deposed that they are well acquainted with the hand writing of the said Robert Moore dece'd. and verily believe that the said will and the name of Robert Moore thereunto subscribed are all of the proper hand writing of the said testator whereupon the said will is ordered to be recorded. In the Name of God Amen I Nanny Feild of the County of Dinwiddie and the Town of Petersburg being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect sense & memory thanks be to God; do hereby make and ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament in manner & form following viz.- Item. I give and bequeath to my son George Feild Five hundred pounds which his brother Theophilus Feild is to pay for the relinquishment of my Dower Estate, also my Chest of Drawers to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Strachan my Bed & Furniture of every discription, likewise all my wearing apparel of every kind to her and her heirs forever. Item. In the name of God Amen I John Couper of the Town of Petersburg being of lawful age and sound in mind and memory tho' in a low state of health do make & ordain this my Last Will and Testament. First- It is my wish and desire that all my property and estate be equally divided between my sister Mary Couper,her husband Thomas Couper and their children John Couper, Maryane Couper, and Jane Couper to be shared equally.- Second- As the children of my sister and brother in law are not yet of lawful age it is my wish and desire that Thomas Couper and John Cooper his son should still continue to carry on the business of Tallow Chandlers which I now follow and as soon as John Cooper shall arrive at the lawful age of twenty one that he shall be entitled to and receive from my Executors the one fifth part of my whole estate, and that Maryane and Jane should also receive their proportions of one fifth each as soon as they shall obtain the full and lawful age of Eighteen years. Third- I wish it to be fully understood that the whole of my property is to be loaned to my sister Mary and her husband Thomas Couper without interest untill the children shall become of age and then for my Executors to pay the said John, Maryane and Jane their proportions. I give and bequeath unto my two sisters Mary Britton and Anne Franklin Five Hundred Dollars each to them their heirs and assigns forever.- Item. I leave my lott & houses in Pocahontas & my lott or lotts on Sandy beach and all the rest of my estate not yet disposed of to be sold by my Executors to the highest bidder at six months credit the proceeds to be applied towards the payment of the foregoing legacies.- Item. I give and bequeath unto Mary Newton one hundred pounds current money of Virginia also all the residue and remaining part of my Estate both real & personal, to her, her heirs & assigns forever.- Lastly, I appoint & ordain my said cousin James Williams to be Executor to this my Last Will and Testament. I Joseph Jackson, being in sound mind & memory, Do hereby nominate and appoint Edward Stabler and Joseph Simpson Merchants of the Town of Petersburg aforesaid, the sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. Imprimis, That the said Edward Stabler and Joseph Simpson are hereby appointed and fully authorized to demand and receive all my Debts, Books and papers of what nature or kind soever, And to demand, receive, dispose of or sell, all my Goods Merchandise and Effects, of what kind or denomination soever. I George Lesslie of the Town of Petersburg being of sound mind and memory and fearing I shall not long continue so, Do by these presents will and bequeath unto my true and Lawful wife Mary Lesslie all my real and personal estate whatever to hold and enjoy the same with all the priviledges thereunto appurtaining for the maintenance of her and my children that are under age untill that my youngest son George Lesslie shall be of the age of Twenty One years being now in the fourth year of his minority then I will that the whole shall be equally divided among my Children my wife bearing an equal part among them (Memo that is to say all her and my Children that are under age ) whereunto I have set my hand and Seal this twenty eighth day of December one thousand and seven hundred & Eighty four and in the ninth year of American Independance.
