Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1760. OWNERS: Originally in possession of the Calland family, now owned by Mrs. Cabell Cobb. (1937) DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is enclosed with a rock wall, which has fallen down in many places. It is filled with briars and bushes and is difficult to get through. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Sacred to the memory of Samuel Calland Who departed this life on the 22nd day of March 1818 in the 31st year of his age Sacred to the memory of Ralph S. Calland Who departed this life on the 29th of March 1815 in the 25th year of his age Sacred to the memory of James Calland Who departed this life on the 5th day of March 1817 in the 25th year of his age Sacred to the memory of Anna B. Calloway Consort of Henry G. Calloway Who departed this life the 6th day of Sept. 1810 in the 29th year of her age Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Calland Consort of Samuell Calland the Elder who departed this life 4th February 1828 in the 68th year of her age Here rest a woman good without pretense Blessed with plain reason and with sober sense No conquest she but oe’r herself desired No arts essay’d but not to be admired Passion and pride were to her soul unknown Convinced that virtue only is our own So firm yet so soft, so strong yet so refined Heaven as its purest gold by tortues tried The saint sustained it, but the woman died.
