Meadows Cemetery Location: 7.5 miles south of Chatham, Virginia on Route #29, thence east (left) on a private road. The graveyard is on the right side of the road, a short distance from J.H. Fathing’s house, originally the home of R. W. Carter. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1824. OWNERS: R. W. Carter 1860 C. T. Owen 1914 J. R. Scruggs 1914 J. H. Fathing 1915 DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is within short distance from the house originally owned by R. W. Carter. It comprises about ˝ acre and is enclosed with a wire fence. There are ten cedar trees in the enclosure. The stones are small with the exception of one family marker with the inscription “Carter”, which was placed thee about 1914. It is neatly kept, no undergrowth is to be seen. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: R. W. Carter was Captain of Company G, 53rd, Virginia Regiment, Pickett’s Brigade, Armstead’s Division, 1861-1865. Small square stones have the following inscriptions: Robert W. Carter July 23, 1824 July 31, 1873 Sallie Catherine wife of Stephen T. Carter 1853 1888 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: J.
