PITTSYLVANIA CO., VA - CEMETERIES – Carter Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Carter graveyard: 1937 Feb. 5 Research made by Mabel Moses Cemetery Location: 4 miles south of Chatham, Virginia, on Route #29, west side of the road. Route #29 is known as the “Seminole Trail”. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1854. OWNERS: Jesse C. Carter and descendants. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is only about 100 yards from “Banister Hall” and has no fence or wall around it. There are several very pretty tall cedars on this ground. There are only a few markers of the Carter family there, but no doubt many of the older generation are buried there but no slabs to indicate this. Below are the following inscriptions taken from these markers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Jesse C. Carter Who died 15th July 1860 in the 51st year of his age Behold he taketh away, Who shall say unto him What doest thou. Sacred to the Memory of Nella L. Carter daughter of Jesse and Lucy L. Carter died 14th July 1854 in the 9th year of her age Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God Erected by Pittsylvania Lodge #24 to the memory of Edward T. Davenport who died Sept. 12th 1847 At the home of Jesse C. Carter Sacred to the memory of Celestia A. wife of John M. Hutchings M.C. and daughter of Jesse C. Carter and Lucy L.
