Meadows Cemetery Location: In Chatham, Virginia, .3 mile south of the Chatham Post Office on Route #29. The cemetery is on the west side of the road, back of the Elementary School Building. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: The cemetery was begun in 1872. OWNERS: H. L. Carter, Chatham Cemetery Company, Chatham, Virginia. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery has tombstones of soapstone, hand carved. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The oldest marker in the cemetery was in 1833, but these bodies were transferred from other sections of the country. Sacred to the memory of Richard Whitehead Born May 1, 1773 Died Dec. 4, 1843 To the memory of Percy Whitehead Born July 1, 1775 Died Jan. 8, 1851 In memory of James A. Ross Born at Smeaton Midlothean Co. Scotland Dec. 31, 1810 Died at Chatham, Va. June 19th, 1873 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. This tablet was erected by his affectionate brother Robert Ross of Edenburg, Scotland. Thomas J. Watson youngest son of Thomas J. and Elizabeth L. Watson Born January 1st, 1811 and died in hope of eternal rest, while a student at Trinity College, Oct. 12, 1833 Age 22 years 9 months, 11 days In memory of Wilber Frisk Watson Eldest son of Thomas J. and Elizabeth Watson born Aug. 25, 1839 Died June 8, aged 23 years, 9 months, 14 days Boast not thyself of tomorrow, for thee knoweth not what a day may bring forth, for death is every where. Let me not murmur nor repine, under these trying strokes of thine, but while I walk the mournful road, be still and know that thou art God. In memory of Harriett and her child Harriett J. L. wife of Charles T. Keatts and daughter of T. and E.S. Carter born Oct. 19, 1839 married 8th of June 1856 Died 14 March 1857 age 17 years, 4 months, 23 days Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me, Thy staff it comforts me. On one side of the monument is inscribed: Elizabeth S. daughter of G.L. and J.L. Keatts born 21 Oct. 1856 Died July 23, 1857 age 9 months 20 days To the memory of my beloved wife and best friend Jane Augusta Clark Fowlkes Died September 12, 1863 In the 33 year of her life For eleven years she brightened the pathway of my life.
