PITTSYLVANIA CO., VA - CEMETERIES – Fitzgerald, Brown Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Fitzgerald, Brown cemetery: 1936 Aug. 19 Research made by Mabel Moses Cemetery Location: 2 miles east of Shockoe Baptist Church on Route #57 leading to Halifax, Virginia, at the home of A. B. Brown. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1808 Date of oldest tombstone. OWNERS: S. F. and A. B. Brown. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This family cemetery is used jointly due to the fact that Mary Jane Fitzgerald, a daughter of Samuel Fitzgerald, a son of Edmond, married Joseph Brown, a son of Martin Brown of Amherst County, according to the family Bible records, on May 31, 1870, by Rev. A. B. Brown. This was originally the Fitzgerald burying ground as the oldest members of the Fitzgerald family are buried here. It has been handed down for generations that Edmond Fitzgerald was born on the ocean in 1745 as his family were coming to America. At this cemetery is a very peculiar slab made of a large rock with no name or date on it, and it is thought to be that of the father and mother of Edmond Fitzgerald as they are not known to be buried elsewhere. Mary Jane Brown and husband Joseph are buried there, and also two sons, Joseph who died about 30 years ago and Sam F. Brown, who died about 18 months ago (1936). Mary Jane Brown died sometime after her husbands death. According to Will Book 5 page 278 she died in 1910 leaving this home to S.F. and A.B. Brown.
