(1936) DESCRIPTION: [blank] HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: John Jenkins was born in Loudon County in 1758, was an early and notable preacher in the county. He moved with his parents to Pittsylvania during the Revolutionary War in which he served as commissary to the army and was probably employed by the post at Peytonsburg. In 1796 he was ordained to the ministry. He applied himself so diligently to study that he became a proficient scholar with an understanding of the Greek, Latin and Hebrew languages. It was said of him that he was perhaps the best educated man of his day in the Roanoke Association. Through his untiring efforts he became a preacher of marked ability. In 1795 he established a church at Lower Banister or Riceville, and a few years later a church at Shockoe. The Shockoe Church was ever mindful of the colored people and six months after its organization the minutes read “Alba a negro woman, the property of John Irby, was received into the membership of the church by experience.” Jenkins’ tomb is not far distance from the Riceville church from which I took the following inscription. Elder John Jenkins An eminent Baptist Minister Born Dec. 25, 1758 Baptized in 1792 by Elder Jeremiah Moore Ordained at Straightstone in 1794 Died March 1828 SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Tombstone Inscriptions Visit by worker. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
