Meadows Cemetery Location: 5.8 miles northeast from Chatham, Virginia, on Route #685, thence .25 mile (right) east on private road leading to the graveyard. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1842 OWNERS: The original owner of this property was Thomas B. Jones. The graveyard was reserved by the Jones descendants. The property surrounding this graveyard is now owned by Mr. Promise Shelton, a descendant of Thomas B. Jones. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard comprises about one square acre and is enclosed by a rock wall, four feet high and two feet thick. The rocks are large, long and flat, and are placed together to fit so securely that no mortar was used. The graveyard is in excellent condition showing that every effort has been made by the different owners of the surrounding property to keep it in good condition. There are a number of large oak, cedar and pine trees, lilac and old rose bushes, and a few small shrubs, which have been planted recently in the graveyard. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This is the private graveyard of the Jones’ and their descendants, originally owned by Thomas B. Jones. Thomas B. Jones was in the Revolutionary War. Richard Jones, grandson of Thomas B. Jones, was considered one of the wealthiest citizens of Pittsylvania County at the beginning of the War Between the States. It is said that Richard Jones had $40,000. which he invested in Confederate securities, bonds. Mrs. James S. Jones and other members of the Jones descendants have these bonds today. Jones Who died Jan. 26, 1868 Age 42 years 10 months 20 days Her end was peace, saying Glory to God in the highest, my little children follow me. Sacred to the memory of Eliza A.
