PITTSYLVANIA CO., VA - CEMETERIES – Pannil Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Pannil graveyard: 1937 June 19 Research made by Lona Dalton Cemetery Location: 5 miles east of Gretna, Virginia, on Route #40 thence 2 miles south on Route #685. The graveyard is on the east side of the road. Pittsylvania Co., Virginia DATE: 1845. OWNERS: Always and still owned by the Pannil family and their descendants. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This old graveyard has a very substantial rock wall about three feet high around it. The graves are covered with berries and bushes, and it is almost impossible to get through them. There are a good many large oak and cedar and pine trees. There are only three graves which have tombstones, one of them is a small child’s grave. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In memory of Bethenia Pannil whose maiden name was Letcher Born in Patrick County, Virginia 21 day of March 1780 Died 23 Feb. 1845 A pious and exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. I see thee still Thou art not in the grave confined Death cannot claim the immortal mind Let earth alone o’er sacred trust. But goodness dies not in the dust Thee grandma, no it is not thee Beneath the coffin lid I see Thou to a fairer land art gone There -- -- my journey done (2 words could not make out) -- -- -- thee still Engraved at the request of her affectionate grandaughter. Whose memory and affection she and love never die Sacred to the memory of David Pannil who was born in Orange County Virginia the 13th of January 17__ (Could not make out) and died the 5th of November --- Pannil He had a warm generous and beloved heart, was just to all men and died leaving many friends. Who regretted the death of their best friend. He left a widow and two infant children. This memorial is erected as a tribute of respect to him by his son William Pannil. My flesh and my heart faileth. But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
