Williams and Thomas Shelton. Gentlemen - the Justices of Pittsylvania County Greeting... Whereas George Dodson, Lucy Dodson, Garland Ingram and Hannah Ingram by their certain indenture of bargain and sale bearing the date the 13th day of November 1813 have sold and conveyed unto Obidiah P. Terry, Fifty one acres of land with their appurtences lying and being in the county of Pittsylvania. And whereas the said Lucy Dodson and Hannah Ingram cannot conveniently travel to our county court of Pittsylvania to make acknowledgement of the said conveyance; Therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgement which the said Lucy Dodson and Hannah Ingram shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance contained in the said indenture which is hereto annexed. And we do therefore command you that you do personnaly go to the said Lucy and Hannah and receive her acknowledgement of the same and examine her privily and apart from the said George Dodson and Garland Ingram her husband, whether she doth, doth the same freely and voluntary without his persuasions or threats; and whether she is willing that same should be recorded in our said court. And when you have received her acknowledgement and examined her as aforesaid that you distinctly and openly certify us thereofs in our said court, under your hands and seals sending then there said indenture and this writ: William Turnstall Clerk of our said court at the court house the 19th day of November 1813 and the 38th of the Commonwealth. By virtue of the above commission to us directed we the subscribers being of the bench (?) of the said county, do certify that we did personally go to the above named Lucy Dodson and Hannah Ingram and examined them privily and apart from the above named George Dodson and Garland Ingram, their husbands and we do further certify that they declared that they freely and voluntarily acknowledged the indenture hereunto annexed and they did it without the persuasions or threats of their said husbands and that they were willing the same should be recorded in the county court of Pittsylvania. Given unto our hands and seals the 20th day of November 1813 and the 38th of the Commonwealth. Robert Walters Williams At a court held for Pittsylvania County the 21st day of February 1814 this commixxion for privily examining and taking the re;liquishment of Lucy Dodson and Hannah Ingram wives of George Dodson and Garland Ingram in and to the land conveyed by the annexed indenture was returned to courts and ordered that the land be recorded.
