VA Thomas Jefferson Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia to all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye; that in consideration of the ancient composition of thirty five Shillings Sterling paid by James Shockley into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said James Shockley a certain tract or parcel of Land contain-ing three hundred and forty Eight acres by Survey bearing date the third day of December, one thousand seven hundred and Seventy seven lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania on both sides of the long branch of Little Turkey Cork, and bounded as followeth, to wit. Beginning at the said Shockley's corner white oak; thence new lines north. Eight five degrees west, One hundred and thirty poles to a red oak crossing the Long branch thence South twenty two degrees west forty poles to pointers South forty nine degrees west ninety five poles to a white oak in Copelands line: South fifty and a half degrees east. One hundred and twenty four poles to a red oak in Copeland's Line: thence along the said Shockley's line north twenty seven degrees East one hundred and sixty five poles to a white oak: and thence north sixty nine degrees west. One hundred and ninety poles to the Beginning with its Appurtenances; to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its Appurtenances, to the said James Shockley and his Heirs forever. In Witness whereof, the said Thomas Jefferson Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia hath hereunto set his hand and Caus-ed the lesser Seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richm-ond on the first day of September in the year of our lord one thous-and seven hundred and Eighty and of the Commonwealth the fifth.
