Name:: Bettie P. Carter Age 75 as of 1930 Widow of James Carter, Jr. Married Feb. 19, 1874 by Rev. Geo. David Husband died on March 22, 1915 from hardening of arteries; Carter was a color bearer at battle of Gettysburg where he was wounded, causing much suffering soon after. Pittsylvania County, Va (Chatham) Member of: 53rd Va Infantry, Company I under Rawley Martin, Col. and William Tredway, Capt. Records showed that Carter enlisted on April 28, 1861 and was in 53rd Regiment; he was promoted 4th Corporal Feb. 27, 1862 and to First Corporal March 13, 1865; muster roll for July and August 1864 showed him as Pvt. Application approved by Scott Carter, Chm. of Pension Board.
