Lovelace, was a drover. Letter to John H. Johnson, pension clerk, dated April 4, 1931: My dear sir: As the Chairman of the Relief Committee of the Rawley Martin Chapter I investigated the claims of old Uncle Sam Stone and when I was satisfied as to the truth of the statements, I aided him in his application. I used the word "drover" because I did not know just the term which designated his service. This service was driving cattle, and collection other supplies in Pittsylvania Count and working in the Commissary at Danville. He was drafted under the Act calling for slaves to work on breast works and other public service for the Confederacy. The Court Minutes show that his Mistress, Mrs. Lizzie Stone, did furnish one slave in 1865 and according to the settlement of her husband's estate I find only one Sam, son of Daniel, of suitable age, among her servants at this time, others being drafted earlier. The application is of Sam Stone the son of Daniel. Clack Grasty signed the application as one who knows of the service and Mr. J. S. Jones as having known him a number of years as a reliave trust-worthy man. I therefore trust you will approve this application. Yours very truly, Sallie H. F. Jones, Chmn. of Relief Committee. I hereby certify that I personally examined the Court records of Pittsylvania County, VA, for the service of Sam Stone and hereby report the same to you. Sallie H. F. Stone Pension of $8 yearly was allowed.
