Comrades of veteran: VA town: Gretna c / o Mrs. Laura White Member of: Battery 3, 10th Battalion, VA Artillery Letter to J. T. Clement, Judge in Chatham--dated Feb 2. 1934 From S. J. Thompson, Atty. from Huntburg, VA: My dear Judge: I have your letter of the 29th, and I talked with my father and Uncle Raleigh about Chas. Thompson, and they are both well axquainted whith him and know that he lived with Grandfather, Capt. Samuel Thompson, a good many years, but neither of them are positive as to whether or not he served as a body servant for grandfather during the war. My father says that his understanding is that Chas. Thompson assisted grandfather during the war in rounding up deserters, returning runaway slaves, and that kind of thing during the war, while grandfather was acting as Home Guard, but he is uncertain whether or not he was with grandfather in actual conflicts. This is all the information that I can gather and I hope it will suffice. With best wishes I am, Very sincerely yours, Samuel J. Thompson.
