Select Marriage Records, 1806-1830 - Pittsylvania Co. VA CHATHAM VA COURTHOUS Pittsylvania county was named for William Pitt, Earl of Chatham. This celebrated English statesman and great friend of the American Colonies was honored because he took such a prominent part in securing repeal of the odious Stamp Act of 1766. The county seat was also named Chatham. The county was formed in 1767 from Halifax, which had been formed in 1752, which had been formed from Lunenburg in 1745, which had come out of Brunswich in 1745. At that time Pittsylvania embraced the present Patrick and Henry counties which were both formed in 1777. The county has been its present size since that date. P. 60 Coleman H.
