Pittsylvania County, Virginia Will Book 2, p. 87 In the name of God Amen. I William B. Anderson of the county of Pittsylvania State of Virginia being of sound mind & disposing memory, thanks be to God for the same & calling to mind that it is now appointed for man to die do make this my last will & testament, revoking all other former wills by me made to wit: 1st. It is my will & desire that all my just debts first be paid. 2nd. It is my will & desire that my wife Mary Ann Anderson do have the following negros & property Girt, Peter, Lewis, Green, Jim & Letty during her life, also my household & kitchen furniture, my tract of land & stock of every kind, plantation tools & crop of every discription, except my tobaco which belongs to my son James E. Anderson for his services rendered as an overseer he being the manager for my family. 3rd. I give & bequeath unto my son David R. Anderson 2 negros which he has in possession. 4th. I give & bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Ratliff one negro girl named Hanna which she has in possession. 5th. I give & bequeath unto my son John R. Anderson one negro girl named Charlotte which he has now in possession. 6th. I give & bequeath unto my daughter Mary Ann Harris or the heirs of her body one negro girl named Ester together with her increase (she having them in possession) my reasons being her husband Charles Harris has 2 sets of children. 7th. I give & bequeath unto my son James E. Anderson one negro girl named Sindy & 2 children which he has in possession. 8th. It is my wish for all of my property not herein named, to remain together until next fall then my wife can take out of my stock, household & kitchen furniture (so much as she wishes) and as much of my crops of all sort as she wants, my crop tobacco to go to my son James for the same reasons assigned above. 9th. It is my wish next fall for such of my stock, household & kitchen furniture together with such parts of crops & plantation tools as my wife may think she will not need & also one negro woman named Charity & her 4 youngest children to be sold & the proceeds of the sale thereof to be put out at interest until the death of my wife. 10th. And it is my will at the death of my wife that the negros left as above to my wife together with all of the other property left her be sold (reserving to my son James E. Anderson to choose of one of two of the negros given to her to wit: Jim or Lot whichever he chooses) and the proceeds be equally divided between my 4 children as named in the beginning parts of my will. 11th. And it is further my will that my son James E. Anderson to have all the land north of the corner of Tolbert Barker's line where I have a plant beds running East or nearly so to a line formerly between my land and Charles Harris. 12th. And it is my will if my wife thinks proper at any time to sell any portion of the negros I leave her she can do so & the money ... out at interest until her death & then comes in with the rest as before stated & she having the interest for her own benefit. 13th. And it is further my will that at the death of my wife that the residue of my land not herein disposed of be sold & the proceeds divided among my children as above named . And I do hereby make constitute my son James E. Anderson my sole Executor In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand & affix my seal this 5 day of January 1850.
