Will of Nathan Anderson, 1845 Will book 2, p. 121. In the name of God Amen. I Nathan Anderson of the County of Pittsylvania Virginia Being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory (for which I thank God) and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and bequeath the same in manner following that is to say. 1st It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid out of my estate as soon as it be practicable. 2nd I give and bequeath unto my wife Elizabeth C. Anderson all my estate both real and personal together with all moneys and debts during her natural life or widowhood for the especial purpose of enabling her to raise and maintain my younger children and more especially to enable her educate my three youngest sons (to wit) Thomas N., George W., and James R. Anderson. It is also my will that if any of the slaves hereby bequeathed to my said wife shall become refractory and unmanageable that my said wife have full power and authority to sell and dispose of such slave or slaves as she may think proper after counseling with some confidential friend on the subject and the proceeds arising from the sale of such slave or slaves that my said wife have full power and authority to invest in other slaves for the use of herself and family and for the benefit of my estate as she may feel proper or that she have the privilege and right instead of investion said proceeds in other slaves that she use the said proceeds in any other way for the aforesaid purposes. 3rd It is my will and desire that as my children severally shall arrive of age, marry or leave their Mother that my said wife so provide and give them of property as to make them equal with those of my other children who have received advancements in my lifetime (to wit) that she give to each of them as they may leave her one horse bridle and saddle one bed bedstead and furniture one cow and calf and half a dozen sheep each. 4th It is my will and desire that at the death of my said wife that the whole of me estate both real and personal be equally divided between all my children or if any of them shall have died, then the legal heirs of their body taking into consideration the advancements that may have been made either by myself or wife to any of them. And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend William W. Keen and my wife Elizabeth C. Anderson Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.
