Thompson Sr of the County of Pittsylvania do hereby make and publish this as my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit viz: In the first place it is my desire that a certain negro boy by the name of Isaac be sold to pay my debts and if the sale of said negro be not sufficient for that purpose that the balance be made up from the sale of such part of my personal estate as my wife may select. In the next place I give to my four oldest daughters Elizabeth, Lydia, Mary and Martha a certain negro woman named Sully and her future increase to them and their heirs forever. I also give to my four oldest daughters above named one feather bed each. I also give to my son Saml H. Thompson Jr a certain gray horse now owned by me, and lastly I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Thompson the whole of the remaining part or parts of my stock of every kind, household and kitchen furniture, all the provisions that may be on hand at the time of my death and I also give to my said wife Mary Thompson during her natural life one certain negro man named Bob and a girl named Summitha. At the death of my said wife I wish the said negroes Bob and Summitha with increate if any to be equally divided between all of my children except my son Samuel Jennings (?). I do hereby appoint my said wife Mary Thompson executrix of this my last will and testament and request the court to allow her to administer as such without being required to give Security. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 29th February 1856. Samuel H. Thompson (Seal) Witness: O. E. Hamblen Samuel C. Jones At a County Court held for the County of Pittsylvania on the 19th day of May 1856 the last will & testament of Samuel H. Thompson Decd was presented by Samuel C. Jones a subscribing witness to the said will and it appearing to the Court that the other witness to the said will hath departed this life and that his signature thereto is genuine and doth order that the said will be recorded and on the motion of Mary Thompson the Executrix in the said will named who made oath and entered into and acknowledged a bond with penalty of eight thousand dollars conditioned according to law certificate is granted her for obtaining probate of said will in due form, the Testator requesting the Court not to require Security of the said Executrix. Teste L. Scruggs, Clk. Additional Comments: Samuel H. Thompson was the son of Jennings Thompson and Elizabeth Street. The children listed in the will are from his first marriage to Nancy Davis. The four children from his second marriage to Mary (Polly) Holt daughter of Miles Holt and Sally Fowlkes are not name individually in the will.
