John Thompson Born in Queen Ann County, Maryland Oct. 22, 1768 Died in Portsmouth July 27, 1847 In memory of Lieut. William B. Lyne of the U.S. Navy who fell from the U.S. ship Pennsylvania in the harbor of Norfolk on the night of the 29th of April 1841 and was drowned in the 36 year of his age. In all the relations of life Lieut. Lyne, was irreproachable. He was an ardent and high virtues will time secured for him universal regard. Inspelled by the admiration of his character the Petty officers & seamen of the U.S. ship Pennsylvania and the citizens of Portsmouth mingled their tears at his grave and erected this monument to his memory. B. Wilson Born Feb. 7, 1815 Died Aug. 12, 1855 Of meek and quiet spirit benevolence purity and love marked her conscience and her reward is a glorious inheritance. Blessed are the pure in spirit for they shall see God In this cemetery there are two plots dedicated to the Confederate dead, one was plotted of and a monument erected by the Memorial Association of Portsmouth, Va. and in that lot there are twenty markers with the names of the Soldiers killed in the different battles in the War Between the States. In the second plot there is a monument erected to the Sisters of Mercy, which was an organization to nurse the wounded during the War by the ladies of Portsmouth and there is a number of markers on this lot and some are to the unknown. At Rest, I H S Do you ask to whom is this monument dedicated? Answer to the beloved and lamented tenant, one of Gods own dear children Jane Latimer The devoted and affectionate consort of S. M. Latimer unexcelled in her virtues, affection and sympathy for him. She was a devoted and sincere friend, a kind neighbor and indulgent mistress and to all she mingled affiable genteel courtesy. God was pleased to make his call on the 18th day of August 1847 and she responding with a murmur fled to the arms of her dear Jesus, when the weary rest from their labor and the troubled soul find peace. God called and his mandate was obeyed, of such is the kingdom of heaven. Aged 42 years 5 months and 42 days Oh, dearest Jane, hast thou fled where I no more shall see thee. Died in Portsmouth Va. 1832 aged 46 years and Nancy Jarvis infant of John and Ann Jarvis Died in 1793 and Elizabeth Machern Jarvis mother of John Jarvis Sen’r. Born in same Co., Died in Portsmouth Va. 1809 aged 84 yrs. (All on one monument.) In memory of Lieut. William Henry Cocke of the United States Navy who was killed on board the U.S. Schooner Fox. Under his command, while entering the harbor of St. Johns Porto Rice, by a cannon ball, fired from the Moro. on the 6th day of March 1823. In the 52nd year of his age Persuant to an order from the Secretary of the Navy, his remains were dis- interred and brought to this Country in the U.S. Schooner, Porpoise, which arrived at Portsmouth Va. County of Norfolk, on the 25th of July 1832. In which day they were landed and deposited in his natal soil, and are now lying and preserved under this beautiful marble. He was an officer of Great merit, and bid fair to render essential service to his country; and to reap a harvest of distinguished honour to himself. John J. Land who was born in Princess Anne Co. Va. Dec. 11th 1812 He became a resident of Portsmouth Va. in the year of 1833 where he commenced the mercantile business, and continued to be a merchant in this place until the time of his death Jan. 5, 1842. At the age of 29 years and 25 days Here lyes his body resting from all cares under this slab of marble. Waiting the resurrection morning and leaving an affectionate wife and three small children to mourn their irreparable loss. It can be truly said he was an affectionate husband, a fond and devoted father, a worthy Citizen, a just and upright man. His death was sincerely deplored by his many relatives and friends.
