Moore Cemetery Location: Oak Grove Cemetery, north side of Glasgow Street, between Armstrong Street and First Avenue Portsmouth Co., Virginia DATE: 1856. OWNERS: Maria Ashbury Etheridge estate. DESCRIPTION: Tall marble slab with an open book carved on the top. On one side the writing is illegible, on the other is this inscription: “He gave my soul a living hope, That I should never die”. The main inscription reads: In Memory of Maria Ashbury Etheridge who was born Dec. 19-5 Died Oct. 8, 1856 Aged 50 years, 9 mos. 28 days Faithful mother, may this spot never be by us forgot Thou the Christian path hast trod Dearest Mother rest with God. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Mrs. Etheridge was the grandmother of Mrs. Norman R. Hamilton whose husband is Representative in Congress from this District at the present time.
