Howell Cemetery Location: On the southwest corner of High and Court Streets Portsmouth, Virginia DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: Trinity Parish since 1782. [1936] DESCRIPTION: It has a solid brick wall approx. four feet high with iron gates, two entrances one on High Street the south side between Court and Dinwiddie and one on the west side of Court between High and King Streets. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Erected by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities In memory of Col. Bernard Magnum of Luneville, France. who aquitted his native country along with the Galland La Fayette to aid our country. In the accomplishment of her Independence. He settled in Portsmouth and was a worthy citizen. One of the first borough magistrates and Col. of the Militia of Norfolk and Portsmouth. He died Nov. 1st 1819 aged 85 and is buried here. And by the grace of God, lived a Christian life and died a Christian death in the sure hope of life Eternal through the atonement and mediation of the Lord Jesus. Blessed are the dead who die in Christ. To the memory of Mrs. Mary A. H. Le Cunte wife of Captain John Le Cunte of the United States Army and daughter of J. H. Laurence Esq. of New York She died on the 19 of November 1825 age 28 years In the full hope of happiness which is the reward of life piety and virtue. In memory of George Wm.
