Hutcheson Cemetery Location: 10 miles south from Portsmouth Post Office to Deep Creek on Route #17, thence east over Canal bridge on Route #166 on winding road 2 miles to lane on east side to burial ground. Portsmouth, Virginia DATE: About 1738. OWNERS: About 200 years ago A. Willis Wilkins owned this farm. The present owner purchased the property from a bank under a Deed of Trust. It was bought by a Mr. Barnes in 1895. [1937] DESCRIPTION: The plat of land is square, one hundred feet by one hundred. The stones are very handsome and massive. The plat has grown up with under-growth but the stones are in good condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: George Washington stayed in this home while the Deep Creek Canal was being built.
