D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy-eight, personally appeared before me, Clk US District Court, the same being a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, (1) Caroline Hitchings, aged 61 years, a resident of Norfolk, in the State of VA, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of (2) William Hitchings deceased, who was the identical (3) William Hitchings, who served under the name of (4) William Hitchings as a (5) Drummer in the Company commanded by Captain Cooke), in the 35th regiment of US Infantry, in the war of (6) 1812. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pension, Norfolk, VA, August 17, 1887 Hon. John C. Black, Com. of Pensions, Washington, D.C. Sir: I have the honor to submit the following report of an inquiry made in the case of Caroline Hitchings, Cert. No. 33.371 war of 1812. Mrs. Caroline Hitchings is the holder of and the beneficiary under pension certificate No 33.371 as a widow of William Hitchings, deceased, late a drummer in Captain W. T. Cooke's Co., 35th Regt, US Infantry, war of 1812. Pension is paid at the Knoxville Agency. The pensioner does not know her age, but thinks she is in her eighty-sixth year. She resides over No. 200 King St., Portsmouth, VA, with Mrs. Martin J. Walker, from whom, and Mr. C. T Phillips, No 224 County St., same City, I obtained her history. From the appearance of the pensioner and from traditional reports, I have no doubt of her right to the pension now being drawn by her. Very respectfully H. P. Maxwell, Special Examiner She further states that she was married to the said William Hitchings, at the city (or town) of Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk, and in the State of VA, on the 14 day of February A. D. 1836 by one (11) ___, who was (12) ___; and that her name before her said marriage was Caroline Purcell, and that she has not remarried since the death of said Wm Hitchings; and she further states that (13) Wm Hitchings was previously married to Elizabeth Williams and that her said husband (14) Wm Hitchings, died at Portsmouth, in the State of VA, on the 31st day of June A. D. 1858; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (15) Portsmouth and Norfolk, VA. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Pension to which she may be entitled under Section 4736 to 4740, inclusive, Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9, 1878, and hereby appoints, with full powers of substitution and revocation John F. Dezendorf, of Norfolk her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim. She further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (16)__ or pension but that her husband Wm Hitchings (whom she) married about 20 years ago and that her residence of Main street, city (or town) of Norfolk county of Norfolk, State of Virginia, and that her post office address is the same. Two attesting witness who can write their names: Arthur Freeman, Wm Hitchings Signature of Claimant Caroline Hitchings (her mark) Also personally appeared Arthur Freeman, aged 67 years, residing at Jefferson street, in Portsmouth, and William Hitchings, aged 32 years, residing at No. 29 Taylor Lane in Norfolk, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Caroline Hitchings for 50 years and for 32 years, respectively; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical (17) Wm Hitchings, who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Captain Cooke, in the 35th regiment of US Infantry in the war of 1812 by the following named facts and circumstances, viz: (18) have lived near her, and seen and conversed with her very often and they know that she has not remarried since the death of William Hitchings her husband, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. D. 1878; and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration, &c., were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, including the words __, erased, and the words ___, added; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.
