Carmel Church graveyard: 1937 Aug. 20 Research made by Elizabeth A. Rust Cemetery Location: 4.8 miles west of Powhatan, Virginia on Route #60; thence .2 mile south on Route #627; thence .4 mile west on county road to church on north side of road. Powhatan Co., Virginia DATE: 1841 OWNERS: Trustees of Mr. Carmel Church [1937] DESCRIPTION: The old Mt. Carmel Church has been torn down and the timber used to build a school at Belona. Mr. Carmel was a Presbyterian Church and my informant says it was moved to the present Providence Presbyterian Church at Belona, because it was a more central point for the congregation. This graveyard is fenced in and stands just back of the site of Mr. Carmel Church. There are quite a few of unmarked graves but the following are the inscriptions on the stones there now. A large tall monument, dedicated to the wife of Mr. J. W. Royall, was weather worn and I could only make out the following: In memory of the beloved wife of J. W. Royall ... Died – South Hill, Powhatan County, in December 1849 in her 55 year All that is lovely ... I could not read the rest of the inscription. In memory of Benjamin Mosby Born August 16, 1775 Died March 23, 1841 I am the Resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. In memory of George W. Flournoy Born May 12, 1800 Died July 1, 1841 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. In memory of George Wythe son of Dr. George W. and J. H. Tinsley Born January 29, 1810 Died April 29, 1852 Not dead but gone before In memory of John Hyde Saunders Born December 27, 1784 Died April 23, 1861 He was a ruling elder of the Presbyterian Church worshiping at this place. He was a member of the Petersburg Volunteers in the War of 1812. The noblest work of God, an honest man and an humble christian. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord and their works do follow them. In memory of Amelia Saunders wife of John Hyde Saunders Died October 14, 1851 age 62 years She was an humble, devoted christian, adorning the doctrines of Christ, her Savior, in all her work and conversation. Those who knew her best loved her most. The dead in Christ shall rise first. In memory of George Silas Bryant Born June 21, 1850 Died February 14, 1858 God took thee in His mercy. A lamb unlashed, untried. He fought the fight for thee; He won the victory and thou art sanctified. Josiah S. Smith April 25, 1808 January 6, 1900 Died in the faith Mary W. Smith May 25, 1818 June 2, 1894 Asleep in Jesus HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The graves of prominent citizens of this county. The inscription on Mr. Josiah Smith’s stone is very simple but he was an elder in this church until his death and on whose land Mt. Carmel was built. The cross roads just east of this graveyard are called Smith’s Cross Roads for him.
