Powhatan County, Virginia-- Deed Book 2 page 186-187 I, Goodrich Crump, of the county of Powhatan, being weak in body but sound of mind and memory to make this my last will and testament in the manor and form following; Item, I give unto my wife during her natural life the following slaves and their increase, to wit. Rachel, Mariah, Nancy, Lucy, Bristol, Mj? To be by my said wife given to any of my children she may think proper, but in case she fails to dispose of them by will or gift to some of my children my desire is that the said slaves with increase be equally divided among my sons. I also lend unto my wife during her life the following slaves to wit: Little Peter, Phill, Greg, George, Sam, Old Judith, Old Mariah, George Bartlett, and Geo. Quarrles. But on the death of my said wife my desire is that the said slaves and increase be equally divided among my sons,except George Bartlett. And My will and desire is that at the death or marriage of my said wife that the Negro slave known by the name of George Bartlett be set free and discharged from servitude to all intents and purposes forever and in case by nay means he should be unable to maintain himself my desire is that he should be supported by my estate. Item, I give unto my son, John Crump, his heirs and assigns forever a Negro boy by the name of Solomon. Item, I give unto my daughter, Elizabeth Crump, her heirs and assigns forever the ten following slaves with their increases to wit: Nanny and her two children Abbey and Frederick, Grace and her son Joshua, Phebe,Phillis, Man Essey Claressa. Item, I give unto my daughter, Judith Anderson, her heirs and assigns forever the ten following slaves to wit: Nancy and her seven children viz. Cate, Olive, Rachel, Ann, James, Patience, Edey and Tom; William and Bumpass. Item, my will and desire is that all of my estate both real and personal not before disposed of be equally divided among my five sons John, George, James Ottway, Richard and Henry; and in case of the death of any of my said sons before they come of lawful age, my will is that their shares be equally divided among the survivors of my said sons. Item, my will and desire is that the whole of my estate be kept together for the supply of my family until my daughters come of age or marry or my wife marry or until my sons come of age in either case my executors are hereby authorized to hire out {such of my children's slaves as have not a right to take possession of them} at private sale to the highest bidder as they may think proper or otherwise to work them in common on my land for the support of those children to whom they belong. Item, my will and desire is that if there be any profits arising from my estate after supporting my family that my executors may at their discretion purchase or rent a piece of land to work my children's Negroes on and that such land so purchased by executors may be sold as also the tract of land whereon I now live on the marriage of my said wife or at such a time as my executors may think proper. The money arising from the sale of such lands to be equally divided among the survivors of my said sons, and in the case of no lands being purchased by my executors the profits arising from my estate after supporting my family must be equally divided among my sons in the same manner as the money for the sale of my land is divided & lastly I do hereby appoint William Hickman, Richard Crump, and my son John Crump on his being of lawful age Executors to this my last will and testament and I do also appoint William Hickman and Richard Crump guardians to all my children in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty third of July 1795. Lewis At a court held in Powhatan County the 17th day of December 1795, This last will and testament of Goodrich Crump, deceased, was presented in court and proven by the oaths of Vincent Markham and Jacob Williamson, two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded : and on the motion of Richard Crump and William Hickman two of the executors there in named who made oaths thereto and together with Vincent Markham, Edward Mumford and William Mosby their securities, entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of one thousand pounds, conditioned as directs, certificate is granted them for obtaining probate in due form-liberty being reserved for the other executor named in the said will, to join in the probate, when he arrives to lawful age, If he shall think fit.
