GOODMAN June 22, 1843 Powhatan County, Virginia Book 16 page 69 - 70 This Indenture made this 22nd day of June 1843 between James P. FRENCH of the one part and Littleton B. GOODMAN of the other part. Witnessed that the said James P. FRENCH for and in consideration of the sum of sixteen hundred and two dollars lawful money of Virginia to him by the said Littleton B. GOODMAN in lands paid the weight where of the James P. FRENCH with hereby acknowledge, _____ granted, bargained, and sold, and by these presents doeth grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Littleton B. GOODMAN his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land containing by estimation two hundred and fifty five acres more or less, lying and being in the County of Powhatan in the state of Virginia and being the lot of land assigned to the said James P. FRENCH in the division of his fathers (Hugh FRENCH) estate and known in said division as Lot No 3 adjoining the DOWER land of W. Lucy FRENCH and the land of Thomas H. ISBELL, Meriwether GOODMAN and William S. FRENCH (legalese in the estate of Hugh FRENCH died) and bounded by corners and distances as follows: Beginning at pointers on DOWER lands thence N 84 1/4 E 32 poles to pointers , thence N 10 W 21 poles to pointers, thence N 78 1/4 E 42 2 poles to pine, thence N 46 2 E 48 poles to pointers on ISBELL, thence N 79 3/4 E 132 poles to pointers, thence N 75 E 128 poles to stake, thence S 49 2 poles to post oaks on GOODMAN, thence S 49 W 308 poles to open corner on small branch on John HUDDLESTON, thence N 47 W 136 poles to the beginning. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel with the appurtenances thereto belonging to him the said Littleton B. GOODMAN, his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behalf of the said Littleton B. GOODMAN his heirs and assigns forever. And the said James P. FRENCH for _______ his heirs, _____ and ______doeth hereby convent and agree to and with the said Littleton B. GOODMAN his heirs and assigns that be the said James P. FRENCH and his heirs the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances unto him the said Littleton B. GOODMAN his heirs and assigns against him the said James P FRENCH and his heirs and against all persons whomsoever shall and willingly these presents forever warrant and defend. COLEMAN justices of the peace in the County aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that James P. FRENCH a party to a certain deed bearing date on the 22nd day of June 1843 and here to annexed personnel appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the Clerk of the County Court of Powhatan, in order that the said deed may be recorded.
