I John Cox of Powhatan County being in weak state of health though of a sound mind and perfect memory do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament as follows: In the first place I commend my Spirit to God who first gave it and my Body to the Earth from whence it was taken to be Buried in a Christian like decent manner at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter mentioned and after my just debts and funeral charges are paid I disp___ my Estate in the following manner----I______ land ___ my beloved wife Tabitha Cox the free use and enjoyment of the Tract of Land whereon I now live together with all my slaves, stock of ________ Plantation, utensils, household and kitchen furniture during her natural life except such part of my estate as I hereafter mention and bequeath to my children respectively. Item, my will is that my tract of land lying in the County of Charlotte be equally divided according to the value thereof and it is my desire that my Friends William Marshall who lives near my said land, Nathaniel Price, & Jacob Price, sons of William Price of Prince Edward do ascertain the value thereof and divide the same to the best of their judgment, which said division I desire may be made as soon as my son John Cox shall think most ______. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son JohnCox one-half of my said tract of Land in the County of Charlotte according to the division above mentioned, and it is my will that my said son John shall have the first choice of parts, which said one half of my said Tract of Land in the County of Charlotte I give and devise to my said son John Cox to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath to my son Frederick Cox the other half of my said Tract of Land in the County of Charlotte to him and his Heirs forever. Item, it is my wish that after my wife’s decease my Tract of Land on which I now live shall be equally divided according to quantity and quality by running a line from May (?) Hook Creek in a strait direction to my back line over Micheaux Ferry road so as to leave my dwelling house in that part or half that his [sic] adjoining James (?) Bagby’s land being on the South Side of that dividing line I have above mentioned which said Tract of Land I divide as follows: Item, I give and bequeath to my son _____ Cox one half of my Tract of Land on which I now live being the half that joins with ____am Scott, which will be the lowermost half on said May Hook Creek and his [sic] northward of the dividing line I have before directed to him my son _____ (Price?) Cox and his Heir forever. Item, the other half of my Tract of Land on which I now live being the uppermost half on said Mayhook Creek & the half that his [sic] South of the said dividing line and includes my mansion House I give and devise to my son Tarlton (?) Cox to him and his Heirs forever. Item, It is my will that if my son Tarlton (?) Cox should die [before] he attains the age of Twenty one years, then in that case the half of my land that I have mentioned as given to my son Tarlton I give to my son Price (?) to him and his Heirs forever and that part or half that I have mentioned [ ] my son Price Cox in case of the death of said son Tal[ton] my wish is that the part or half allotted to my son Price my be sold and the money arising from the sale of the same may be equally divided among my six daughters Viz. Eliza Leid(?), Nancy Cox, Polly Cox, Sally Cox, Judith Cox, & _____ Cox to them and their heirs forever. Item, I give unto my son John Cox the horse he now calls his own, also a saddle, also a good feather bed & furniture such as my said wife may think fit to him and his Heirs forever. Item, I give unto my son Frederick Cox such as his mother shall think fit and when a horse and saddle, also a good feather bed and furniture to him and his Heirs forever. Item, I give unto my son Price (?) Cox when he arrives to the age of Twenty one years or sooner if his mother thinks proper a Horse and saddle, also a good feather bed and furniture to him and his Heirs forever. Item, I give to my son Tarlton Cox when he attains to the age of Twenty one years or sooner if his mother shall choose a horse and saddle, also a good feather Bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Leid(?) a horse and saddle such as her mother thinks proper, also a good feather Bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give unto my daughter Nancy Cox when her mother shall see convenient, a horse and saddle, also a good feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Polly Cox when her mother shall see fit a horse and saddle, also a good feather Bed and furniture to her and her Heirs forever. Item, I give and devise unto my daughter Sally Cox when her mother shall find it convenient a horse and saddle, also a good feather Bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Judith Cox when her mother sees proper a horse and saddle, also a good feather Bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Tabitha Cox when her mother shall find it convenient a horse and saddle, also a good feather Bed and furniture to her and her Heirs forever. Item, it is my will that my Wife have power when she shall see the needs of any of my children requiring to impart to hen as she may think fit to relieve their ____ and of that part of my Estate in her hands which I have lent her during her natural life and at her decease my will is that such part of my Estate as shall be remaining and not herein disposed of shall be Equally divided among the whole of my children Viz, John Cox, Frederick Cox, Price Cox, Tarlton Cox, Elizabeth Lied(?), Nancy Cox, Polly Cox, Sally Cox, Judith Cox & Tabitha Cox to them and their Heirs forever and lastly I do constitute and appoint my worthy friends my beloved wife, Tabitha Cox, Jacob Michaux and my son John Cox & my son in law Jepthn(?)
