UNFORTUNATE DUEL
Extract of a letter from an officer of the Army to a gentleman in Raleigh, 
dated, “Washington City, April 26)
“A Duel was fought on the morning of the 25th. The parties were LT. GEORGE R. 
BRIDGES of Chatham, N. C. and Ensign SAMUEL H. BRYANT of Prince Edward County, 
Va., both of the 10th Regt. The latter was shot down at the second fire. The 
ball entered between the 9th and 10th ribs, and could not be found. He was 
truly unfortunate in the affair. His adversary had both fires, the pistol of 
the Ensign having twice snapped.”
