Hamlin Cemetery Location: 4.3 miles southeast of Petersburg, Virginia. Follow Route #460, 2.7 miles, then turn to the left on Route #603 and continue 1.6 miles. Prince George Co., Virginia DATE: 1825, date of oldest grave [marker] OWNERS: The earliest date established on the property was 1880, when it was bought from Alexander Donnan by Homer Atkinson. In 1892 Henry C. Stewart bought it from Alexander Hamilton, Trustee for Homer Atkinson. In 1905 it was bought by Anton Jerabek and wife. In 1906 it was bought by the Southern Timber and Land Company. In 1910 it was bought by Joseph Dohnalek. In 1917, United States Camp Inc. bought it from Bernard C. Syme, special Commissioner for Joseph Dohnalek, and in 1919 it was bought by the Roper Lumber Company, present owner. [1936] DESCRIPTION: None. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Inscriptions on the tombstones are as follows: Sacred to the memory of Eliza W. Birchett daughter of Drury and Catherine Birchett Died 26th of July 1825 in the 24th year of her age As a daughter, sister, or friend she enjoyed the confidence and love of all who knew her. Softly her fainting head she lay upon her Saviour’s breast. He Saviour kissed her Soul away and laid her limbs to rest. Sacred to the memory of Drury Birchett Born July 23, 1762 Died Dec. 10, 1836 An affectionate wife and five children are awaiting the summons which will bid them join a tender husband, a king parent, indulgent master, and an honest man. Drury W. Birchett Son of Drury and Catherine Birchett Born Jan. 4, 1803 Died Mar. 17, 1836 Though lost to earth, to memory dear. Sacred to the memory of Catherine B. Gilliam Consort of Col. James S. Gilliam who departed this life Mar. 5, 1849 Aged 50 yr. 6 mo. and 25 days Rest in peace thou gentle spirit, shroud above, Souls like thine, with God inherit life and love. The endearing virtues of her who lies beneath this slab has passed away. Yet they are not and cannot be forgotten by him who offers this humble tribute to the memory of a dear wife. Heath. There’s not a joy this earth can give like that it takes away. Lucy B. Birchett daughter of Daniel and Sarah Eppes Born June 16, 1814 Died May 11, 1839 There is an hour of peaceful rest to weary wanderers given. There’s a tear for souls distressed, a balm for every wounded breast. ‘Tis found above in Heaven.
