Hamlin Cemetery Location: 4.4 miles south of Petersburg, Va., on Route #301, about 160 yards off west side of road. On the farm of Frank McCann. Prince George Co., Virginia DATE: Earliest date 1836 OWNERS: [blank] DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is about ten yards square and the graves are covered with ivy. There are three cedar trees and one large locust tree in the graveyard. Two of the tombstones have broken and are lying on the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions on the tombstones are as follows: Sacred to the memory of Dr. Joel B. Sturdivant A graduate of Philadelphia Born July 22, 1804 Died Feb. 25, 1836 Released from all his cares and woes, he rests in earth and sweet repose. Daniel W. Sturdivant Departed this life Mar. 28, 1841 aged 36 yr. When the Lord shall bid him leave the body of clay, swift as the lightning way, the years pass o’er till that wished day of happiness appear. Departed this life Nov. 14, 1844 Ann Sturdivant consort of Richard Sturdivant aged 63 yr. Here lies interred beneath this sacred pile, on which I oft have gazed with looks sincere; Peace to her shaded quiescent in the ground, Let her repose until the last great day. Now we are called to part how keen, how deep the pain but we shall still bear in heart and hope to meet again. We part of meet again Sacred to the memory of Julia A. L. Birchett Consort of William G. Birchett and daughter of Richard and Nancy Sturdivant Who died May 4, 1845 aged 25 yr. The endearing virtues of her who lies beneath this slab have passed away. Yet they are not, and cannot be forgotten by him who offers this humble tribute to the memory of a dear wife.
