Miffleton/Darracott Letter, 1860 - Prince George Co. VA Letter from Personal Collection to Eliza C. Miffleton of Prince George County in 1880. On March 16, 1880, the following letter was addressed to Mrs. Eliza C. Miffleton, Disputanta Station, Atlantic, Miss, & Ohio Railroad, Prince George County, Virginia from her son Benjamin Darracott in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Eliza C. Miffleton was the widow of Benjamin Franklin Darracott of Hanover County who died in Henrico County in 1858. Dear Mother, I received your last 2 letters & should have answered the first before I received the second but have been waiting to have Bettie's and my photograph taken so I could send you one, which we have done at last & I forward you one in this. I sent you on of George's photographs in my letter prior to this, one that has been recently taken, did you get it, Well, I am getting on about as usual have plenty of shop work to do – have the same Blacksmith that I had last year. I have completed my 2 buildings – the one at Westland I put up out of hewed oak logs with an extension roof – cottage style – with a good brick chimney – also I have put up a good crib and stable – I will put a shed room to the house in a few days and put up a smokehouse and then I will have good improvements at Westland. I hear from Mr. Foust right often he is always writing for money. He got into some difficulty near Dallas, Texas & ran off and left his cook – wrote back to me for a certificate of character – he is now at a place called Allan Station Collin Co., Texas – about 100 miles above Dallas. I now have 11 head of cattle - & 4 good young work steers which is all that is necessary to do my hauling for shop place & c- I want to enlarge my shop this summer. I need another room to paint in and keep some of my buggy & carriage materials – my young orchard looks very well some of the trees will bear this year – I have been too busy building to set out any more trees. We have not done much gardening yet the weather has been most too wet – we have had a very mild winter peach trees are now in bloom and budding out- The last time I was town, Mr. M. told me that he had written you a few days before – he seemed to want to talk to me but I was in a great hurry & did not stay but a few minutes (something about the Va property, I reckon) he has moved from near the C. H. & now lives at that house this side of the Untitled.ems Malantaba Bridge near where Mr. Threaut ? used to live. I have not been to see him at his new place yet but will go soon. He still works at Bramm's shop – Bessie (Bettie) and George are both well. George is growing up fast and is very interesting child, he wants to spend most of his time at the shop with me. I hope he will be a natural macanic. I do not think there is any preacher at the Baptist Church, Aberdeen. Bessie joins me in love to you and hope this may find you well as your son – B- (Letter from Personal Family Collection, Mary Jane Thomas Stokes, Powhatan, Virginia, Great- Great granddaughter of Eliza Clarice Sharp Darracott Miffleton, ) Submitted by Mary Jane Stokes **************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
