Will of John Hamlin, 1725 - Prince George Co.VA. Will of John Hamlin - 1725 (Deeds etc. 1713-28, page 802, Prince George Co.VA.) In the Name of God, Amen, I John Hamlin of the County of Prince George, being Sick and weak, but (praised be God) of perfect Sence and memory, do make and appoint this my Last Will and Testament, Imprimis I humbly recommend my Soul to Almighty God that gave it, Steadfastly trusting to his gracious acceptation thereof and my Body I commit to the Earth to be decently Interred, at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named, and for what worldly Estate it hath pleased God of his goodness to bless me with, I give and dispose thereof as follows.- First. I give and devise to my Son John Hamlin after his mothers decease or marriage, the plantation I now Live on, with five Hundred Acres of Land thereto belonging, to him and his heirs for ever; also three Slaves, viz't. Indian Peter Matt and Grace, a feather bedd and furniture, six pewter dishes, a dozen of plates, a midling Iron Pott, a frying pann, six Leather or Rush Chairs, my wearing apparrell, my Horse warrick(?), sadle and trooping Arms, and the mair he now claims, also I give and devise to my said Son John, and to his heirs my plantation on the Three Creeks in the County of Isle of Wight, containing about one hundred and Seventy Acres of Land, with six Cows & six Sows. Item. I give and Devise unto my Son Peter Hamlin, and to his heirs for ever my plantation called the Hawksnest, with three Hundred Acres of Land thereto belonging, also my Negro Woman named Amy, a featherbed and furniture, Six rush Bottom chairs, Six pewter Dishes, and a dozen plates, an Iron Pott, a frying pan, a well fixt Gun, four Sows, and a mair that he now claims. Item. I give to my Son Charles Hamlin, and to his heirs for ever, the plantation at Merchants Hope Chappell, with Two Hundred Acres of Land, One Hundred whereof formerly held by Robert Abbernathy, and the other Hundred to be Laid off to him by his Brother John, out of my Land next thereto adjoining, also my Negro Woman named Aggy, a featherbed and furniture, Six Rush Bottom Chairs, six pewter Dishes, a dozen plates, an Iron Pott a frying pan, a well fixt Gun, four Cows, four Sows and a mair that he now claims. Item. I give and devise to my two Sons Hubbord and William Hamlin, and to their heirs for ever, all my Land at the Forke of Nummisseen Creek, to be equally divided between my said Two Sons, but if either of them chance to depart this Life before he attain the age of Twenty one years the survivor to have the whole tract, to him and his heirs for ever, I also give to my said Son Hubbord, and to his heirs, my Negro boy named Jack, a young Horse or mair , a featherbed and furniture, six Rush bottom Chairs, Six pewter dishes, a dozen plates, an Iron Pott, a frying pann, a well fixt Gun, four Cows & four Sows. Item. I give and bequeath to my Son William Hamlin, and to his heirs, my Negro Boy named Jamy, a young horse or mair, a featherbed and furniture, six rush bottom Chairs, six pewter dishes, a dozen plates, an Iron Pott, a frying pan, a well fixt Gun, four Cows, and four Sows. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Ann, my Two Negro Children named Robin and Rachell, to her and her heirs, but if my Daughter Ann chance to depart this Life before she attain to the age of Twenty one years or marriage, then I give the aforesaid Negro Rachell to my Daughter Mary and to her heirs. Item. I direct that (as soon as conveniently may be) one hundred pounds current mony, be Layed out and disposed by my Executrix, and therewith bought Two or more Negro Boys, and Two or more Negro Girls, out of which, I give to Sons Peter and Charles, each a Boy, and to my Sons Hubbord and William, each a Girl, to be severally held by my said Sons, and their heirs. Item. I give and confirm to my Daughter Mary Irby the wife of John Irby and to her heirs, the Negro Girl or Woman named Aggy, now in her possession, which she chose in lieu of the two Negro Children I first designed to give her. Item. After my Debts and funerall Expences are paid and discharged all the rest and residue of my Negros, Goods and Chattels, I give to my Loveing wife dureing her natural Life or widowhood, and (if she do not marry again) at her death it is my Will and Desire that the same be equally divided between my five Sons John, Peter, Charles, Hubbord and William, or the survivors of them but if my wife shall marry again then I give to my said wife a childs part of my Estate, and she to Surrender up the residue of my Estate (except my Daughter Ann's part) to my Brothers Thomas Ravenscroft and William Hamlin, who I appoint trustees till my Son John shall be of age. Also if any of my children should happen to dye before they attain to the age of Twenty one years or marriage, I direct that the Negro's (except the Girl Rachell) Goods and Chattels herein before given them that shall so dye, shall be equally divided between the survivors. Also if any of my Negro's herein before given to my children that is to say, to John, Peter, Charles, Hubbord, William & Ann shall happen to dye or be taken in Execution for the discharge of any Debt or claim against my Estate, then it is my Desire that the same be made good to such child or children out of that part of my Estate Left in the possession of my wife. And Lastly. I nominate and appoint my Loveing wife Ann Hamlin to be Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and makeing void all other Wills and Testaments by me at any time heretofore made. The above written Last Will and Testament of John Hamlin dec'ed. was Exhibited into Court by Ann Hamlin his Executrix, who made oath thereto and it being proved by the oaths of Peter Wynne and Frances Wynne, two of the witnesses thereto, by order of the Court is truly Recorded.
