Will of Sampson Meredeth, 1720 - Prince George Co.VA. Will of Sampson Merredeth - 1720 (Deeds etc. 1713-28, page 448, Prince George Co.VA.) In the Name of God, Amen. I Sampson Merredeth being sick in Body but of sound & perfect sence and memory, praise be given to Almighty God for the same and now being desirous to settle things in order, do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as followeth. First and particularly I recommend my Soul unto the mercys of Almighty God etc. and my Body to be buried in a decent and Christian Like manner and as for what Worldly Estate it has pleased God to give me, I bestow of as followeth, viz't.- Item. I give and bequeath to my son Samson Merredeth my negro man called Jack & my negro girl called Pegg, and one featherbed and Rugg, to him and his heirs for ever, but in case that my son Samson should dye before he comes of age, that then the said negro's should be equally divided amongst the other children.- Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Merredeth my young negro man called Tony, and my negro girl Agar, when she comes to lawful age or marriage, but if in case my said Daughter should dye before she comes to Lawfull age or marriage, that then the said negro's should be equally divided amongst the other children.- Item. I give and bequeath to my son Lewis Merredeth my Two negro girls called Fanny and Nanny, to be delivered him when he comes to Lawfull age, them and their Increase but in case my said son Lewis Merredeth should dye before he comes to Lawfull age that then the said negro's should be equally divided amongst the other children.- Item. I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Meredeth my negro girl called Rose to be delivered when he comes to Lawfull age and one featherbed and furniture, and one rideing horse.- Item. My Will and Desire is that my wife Elizabeth should have the use and Labour of my four negro's named Dick and Ebow, Sue and Jenny, being two men and two women dureing her naturall Life, and after her decease to be equally divided amongst my children, and all the residue of my Estate I give and bequeath to my Loveing wife Elizabeth Merredeth and I hereby constitute, authorize and appoint my Loveing wife Elizabeth Merredeth to be my whole and sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament. My Will and Desire is that my wife shall not be obliged to give Security to the Court so long as she remains a widow, but when she marrys then to give Security for the childrens Estates. The above written Last Will and Testament of Sampson Merredeth dec'ed. was presented into Court by Elizabeth Merredeth his Executrix, who made oath thereto, and it being proved by the oaths of Thomas Rogers and Robert Rivers, witnesses thereto, is by order of the Court Truly recorded. and on the motion of the said Elizabeth Merredeth Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate of the said Will in due form.- Test Wm.
