Prince George Co., VA Miscellaneous Wills Will, and Related Papers, of James Jones 1719 (Deeds etc. 1713-28, page 310, Prince George Co.VA.) In The Name of God, Amen. I James Jones being weake and sick but of sound and perfect mind and memory,praise be therefore given to Almighty God, doe make and ordain this my present Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First and principally I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God, hopeing through the merritts, Death, and passion of my Saviour Jesus christ, to have full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my sinns, and to Inherit everlasting Life, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried, at the discretion of my Executor, hereafter named, and as touching the disposition of all such Temporal Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose thereof as follows.- First. I will that my Debts, and funeral charges, shall be paid and Discharged. Item. I will that my Loving wife have the Labour of four Negro's dureing her natural Life, they are named Will, Robin, Maria, & Betty, provided they are not removed of from the plantation I now live upon, if they are, then Imediately to return to my Executor, which plantation I will my wife shall Live upon dureing her life. Item. I give my wife's two sons two Negro children, one named James, the other unborn, the first child that either Betty or Maria shall bring, to be the other which two Negro children to be Disposed of, to my wife's two sons, as she shall think, the unborn and the born child James to be and remain with their mothers till they come to the age of two years, and a halfe, my will is Likewise that my wife have dureing her life, what household stuff my Executor shall think fitt, and that she have a reasonable maintenance yearly out of my stock. Item. I give to my Daughter Mary Dardin my Negro man Jo, Dureing her life then after to her son Charles Williams. Item. I give my Daughter Eliz. a Negro named Hanna,to be at her dispose at her death or before as she thinks fitt. Item. I give to my Daughter Rebecca two hundred acres of Land, Lying in Surry county, begining from the swamp, up by the spring South, to the outline that to the head line, to her and her heirs for ever. Item. I give my Grandaughter Eliz.Glover one hundred acres of Land on the South side of Paul Runn, to her and her heirs forever. Item. I give my Grandson James Jones, this my plantation, I live upon after my wife's Decease, and all my Land in Prince George County, after his Father and Mother's Decease, to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give to my Grandson Thomas Chappell one hundred acres of land lying in Surry from the swamp South, joining upon William Cooke above to the out Lines to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I give to my Grandaughter Jane Cooke Daughter to John Cooke, one Negro named Amy, to her and her heirs for ever, as also one hundred acres of Land Lying in Surry County, begining at the head Line, to her and her heirs for ever, as also one feather bed and bolster, one rugg one blanket, and if the Ticke be bad Lett a new ticke be bought,as also two young cows, one young mair, one Iron pott, two pewter Dishes, and one Doz. of spoons. All the rest and Residue of my personal Estate, goods, and chattels whatsoever, I do give and bequeath unto my Loving Son James Jones, full and sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament, and I do hereby revoke Disannull and make void all former Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made. Prince George County WHEREAS JAMES JONES the Elder Late of this County Dece'd. did by his Last Will and Testament made and Executed the sixth Day of April 1719 amongst other things in his said Will in the Last clause thereof made a Devise in these words viz. "All the rest and residue of my personal Estate, goods and chattels whatsoever, I do give and bequeath to my Loving Son James Jones full & sole Exor. of my Last Will and Testament." And whereas by a Law of this Colony which Declare Negro, Mullatto, & Indian slaves within this Dominion real Estate etc. it may remain a Doubt whether any of the Dece'dts. slaves pass to the said James Jones by virtue of the said Bequest therefore for Explanation thereof I Gilbert Hay aged sixty three years or thereabouts Deposeth as follows: That at the Instance and request of the said Dece'dt. I did write his Last Will and Testament which is proved and recorded in this County Court, and that the said Dece'dt. did direct me to make the same to his Son James best advantage, Declareing that all these (except his Grand- child Jane Cook) to whom he had given any Negro or Negro's to, in his former Will (which I likewise made) shall have no Negro or Negro's, but they shou'd be given to his Son James Jones and his heirs for ever, with all other his slaves which he had not particularly given away in his said will, and that I accordingly apprehended they were fully given to the said James Jones and his heirs for ever, by virtue of the said Devise, In testimony whereof I have hereto put my hand this 9th June 1719. I Charles Anderson of Westopher Parrish in the County of Charles City, Clerk, being sick in Body but of good and perfect memory (thanks to Almighty God) and calling to mind the uncertain Estate of this Temporal Life, and that all flesh must yield unto Death when it shall please God to call do make constitute ordain and Declare this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, revoaking and annulling by these presents all and every Testament and Testaments, Will and Wills heretofore by me made and Declared either by word or writing. And first being pennitant and sorry for my sins past most humbly desireing forgiveness for the same, I give and commit my soul unto Almighty God my Saviour and redeemer in whom and by the merrits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe assuredly to be saved, and to have full remission of all my sinns, and that my Soul with my Body at the General Day of Resurrection shall rise again with Joy, and through the merrits of Christs Death and Passion possess & Inherit the kingdom of Haven prepared for his Elect and chosen. I give and bequeath unto my Son Charles Anderson after the Decease of my Dear and Loving wife all my Lands I now have or hereafter may or shall belong unto me in this Country or Else where, to him my said Son and to his heirs for ever. and also I give and bequeath unto my said Son Charles Anderson these Negro's following viz:Scipis a Negro man, Betty a Negro Woman, Jack a Negro Boy to him and his heirs. Item. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Francis Anderson these Negro's following viz: Billy a Negro Boy, Hannah a Negro Girl and George a mullatto Boy, to her and her heirs for ever. Item. I will that what Tobacco's I now have in the Country after necessarys for my Family's use are bought, be shipped for England, and the produce of that and what Else I have in England after Debts paid, be Equally Divided amongst my wife and children. Item. I will that my Dear and Loving wife have and enjoy all and singular the profitts of my whole Estate dureing the minority of my children or marriage for their better maintenance and more Liberal Education. In The Name of God Amen. I John Lanthrop of Prince George County do make and design this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say First I bequeath my Soul into the hands of Almighty God believing remission of sinns and everlasting Life by the Merritts death and passion of Jesus Christ my Lord and only Savior. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Lanthrop all my Land on the North side of Second Swamp to him and his heirs forever, and to my son John all my Land on the South side of Second Swamp to him and his heirs for ever. Item. I do desire that my Daughters shall have the priviledge of tending of ground on the Plantation whereon I now live, keeping all things in repair, as long as they keep themselves single. Item. The Bed Whereon I Lye I give to my Loving wife Margaret, and all furniture belonging to it, but no more bedding, and but her third of the Land if she marries. Item. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Elizabeth one Cow and Calfe, and to my Daughter Mary and my Daughter Ann one Cow and Calfe, and one Sow & four piggs, between them both. Item. I give to my Son Joseph one red Heifer with a white face and one Sow Shoat belonging to the black Sow. Item. I give the first fold that my Mair brings to my son John, and the old horse and Mair I give for the use of the Plantation amongst them all, as long as they Live all together, but my son John shall be free at seventeen if his mother marries again, but if she remains my widow he shall serve till he is one and twenty. I Richard Pigeon of Prince George County in Virginia being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, vizt: Imprimis. My will and Desire is that my wife Elizabeth Live with my son Richard and be maintained at his charge and that my said son Richard shall pay unto her yearly one hogshead of tobacco containing six hundred weight in order to bey her necessarys but if my said wife is not willing to Live with my son Richard, then I Desire she may Live with one of her Daughters and Richard pay her the Hogshead of tobacco above mentioned annually. I also give and bequeath to my wife my best bed and furniture during her Life, and at her Decease I give the said bed and furniture to my son Richard. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah three cows and calves and tenn pounds to be paid in a store, the cows and calves and tenn pounds to be paid one year after the marriage of Sarah, but in case of mortallity this Legacy shall be Divided betwixt my son Richard and my Daughter Mary or the survivor. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary three cows and calves & ten pounds to be paid in a store, this Legacy is to be paid within one year after the marriage of my said Daughter Mary, but in case of mortallity this Legacy to be Divided betwixt my son Richard and my Daughter Sarah if they both survive, or to the survivor. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Rebeccah Barlow three cows and calves to be Delivered Imediately after my Decease. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Marks three cows and calves to be delivered Imediately after my Decease. Item. my will and Desire is that my son Richard maintain and take care of my son Charles, but if Richard refuse to comply with this my will and Desire, then my will is that Richard shall pay unto my son Charles the sum of tenn pounds. I John Lanier in the County of Prince George, being verry weak and ailling in Body, but in perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God therefore, it is appointed for all men once to dye. I do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament that is to say, principally and first of all, I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my Body, I commend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian Like and Decent manner, to the Discretion of my Executor nothing Doubting but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again, by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless in this Life, I give Devise and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form. I give to my grandson John Lanier, the son of Nicholas Lanier, my son,a feather bed and bolster, and blankets and Rugg, all new and good, and a small Gunn well fixt, and I give to him two pewter Dishes and Bason, and one chest with Lock and Key, and six spoons, one Iron pott and potthooks, and frying pan, and a small pair of Hillyards(?), and two combs, and a young calfe of three years old, and three sheep. Lastly. I give to my son Nicholas Lanier, all the Land which I now live upon, and all my Land on the otter dams, to him and his heirs for ever, and I give to my son Nicholas, all my moveables and unmoveables.
