PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Dumfries Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Dumfries Cemetery: 1937 Feb. 22 Research made by Susan R. Morton Cemetery Location: On Route #269 about one eighth mile from Route #1 in Dumfries, Virginia. Prince William Co., Virginia DATE: 1691, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Town of Dumfries, Virginia. DESCRIPTION: The following are inscriptions taken from some of the old stones. There are at least fifty graves which either had no inscription or were quite obliterated by time and war, when many of the stones were broken and defaced, and some taken away. Colonel Kandy spent a winter at Dumfries, in fact several camps were there during the war, and the old cemetery was used as a part of the camping ground and was therefore about demolished. A line of the breastworks can still be plainly seen to the north, now covered with trees, here are also many soldiers graves, some unmarked, others more bits of field stone. There is one stone of the table type, with stone supports at each end, which appears to be the oldest there, but the inscription is almost entirely worn off.
