PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Greenwich Presbyterian Church: 1938 Mar. 22 Research made by Susan R. Morton Cemetery Location: Prince William Co., Virginia DATE: About 1859. OWNERS: There seems to be no record of any transfer of this land, but it is said to have been a deed of gift from Charles Green to the Trustees of the church. This applies to the large lot in front of the present church; later five acres was added, also a gift of Charles Green. DESCRIPTION: The church is located in about the center of at least a six and one half acre lot with a large open space in front. The church building and graveyard are several hundred feet from the road. The graveyard surrounds the church on three sides and contains many fine trees, one unusually large holly tree being especially fine. There is also a large oak grove directly back of the church that is part of the property. At both sides of the churchyard are two canopied stiles, with large platforms and seats at both sides. The entrances to the church are one of the interesting features, untrimed cedar columns being used at the two front entrances. There are painted white. The interior of the church is plain. There are several marble memorial tablets on the walls, one of which is copied: “Lucy Ireland, wife of Charles Green, Merchant of Savannah, Ga. died December 26, 1867, age 39 years. Born near this spot, nurtured in the fear of God, early a member of this church, while it’s primative worship was yet held in the old church adjacent, then in decay. She honored her Master by persistant efforts toward the raising of this edifice. In life her pious care, in death her memorial”. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscriptions on the old gravestones tell the story of the church better than anything else. The oldest are copied: Beneath this sod repose the ashes of Mrs. Arminta Moxley who departed this life December 30th, 1858 age 83 years For nearly half a century she was the stay and succor of the Presbyterian Church in this vicinity and permitted to live until the completion of the present church edifice. She now rests within the first grave made in it’s precints. In commemoration whereof and to perpetuate a name honored for consistent dignity of Christian character, and loved for the tender virtues of domestic life, this stone is raised by her children.
