PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Henry House” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Henry house: 1936 July 1 Research made by Susan R. Morton Cemetery Location: 6 miles northwest of Manassas, Virginia, .5 mile northeast of Route #234. Prince William Co., Virginia DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: There seem to be no records of transfer prior to 1930 when it was sold by Hugh Henry, of Havana, Cuba and Arthur Henry to Manassas Battlefield Confederate Park, Inc. 128 acres known as the Henry House, or Henry Farm. Deed Book 88, page 3. DESCRIPTION: (A description of the house and gardens has not been recanted in this space but can be located in the original document at the Library of Virginia.) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This was originally a part of the Carter tract. The house was built by the father of Dr. Isaac Henry, sometime in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Mrs. Isaac Henry was the daughter of Landon Carter, and was brought up at “Pittsylvania” where Dr. Henry’s body now rests, but during the stress of battle it was impossible to take Mrs. Henry there for burial, and she is buried close by the house to the west, together with a son and a daughter. There were two Henry sons, both teachers. One of these sons was a great traveler. He would teach awhile and then become restless and start on a trip afoot, often to Philadelphia, where he had relatives. It was on one of these trips that he evidently lost his life, as nothing was ever heard from him after leaving a farm house where he had stopped on his way. He had several swollen streams to cross and it is thought that he slipped while crossing a foot-log and was drowned. Every inch of ground around this house is hallowed by sacrifice and courage. The following are the inscriptions on the stones in the little cemetery to the west of the house: The grave of our dear mother, Judith Henry Killed by an explosion of shells in her dwelling during the battle of the 21st of July, 1861. When she was killed she was in her 85th year, and confined to the bed by the infirmities of age. She was the daughter of Landon Carter, Senior, and was born within a mile of this place. Her husband, a surgeon in the U. S. Navy on board the Frigate Constellation, Commanded by Commodore Truxton, was one of the sic Captains appointed by General Washington in the organization of the Navy, 1794. Our mother through her long life, thirty-five years of which were spent at this place, was greatly loved and esteemed for her kind, gentle and Christian spirit. In Memory of my dear Sister, Ellen Phebe Morris daughter of Isaac and Judith Henry died October 10th, 1888 aged 81 years She was a self-sacrificing, devoted daughter, sister and aunt. In Memory of Hugh Fauntleroy Henry, Sr. son of Isaac and Judith Henry died June 30th, 1898 aged 85 years Forty of his life were spent in school teaching SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Tombstone Inscriptions Visit by worker. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
