PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Roland” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Roland site: 1938 Apr. 8 Research made by Susan R. Morton Cemetery Location: 3 miles west of Occoquan, Virginia, taking Route #9 from Occoquan to Route #641, thence wood road about a mile towards the river. (This was once a public road, now a wood path). Prince William Co., Virginia DATE: Late 18th century. [home site] OWNERS: William Selecman, and had been in the same family until a few years ago when it was bought by the Occoquan Hydro-Electra Power Company, recent owners. [1938] DESCRIPTION: The old house is now entirely gone, in fact there is nothing left to indicate a home save a table of honeysuckle, which has even overgrown the trees. The old house of frame with central hall, three stories high, with large chimneys at the ends, is said to have contained some very fine interior woodwork. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This was the home of one of the first owners of the iron forge at Occoquan, Virginia, and a family who have been prominent in the life of the community for many years. In the thick woods, possibly five hundred rods from the probable house site, is the graveyard, a large one, but many of the stones without any inscription or too worn to read. The legible inscriptions follow: At Rest Robert Allen died April 29, 1883 aged 70 years Margaret Conner wife of Edward Conner born February 5th, 1846 died March 3rd, 1907 Edward Conner Born June 7, 1833 died February 9, 1892 Margaret Conner born January 10, 1869 died November 5th, 1873 Jane M. H. C. The day is past and gone, the evening shades appear, Oh may we all remember well the night of death is near. We lay our garments upon our beds at rest, so death will soon disrobe us all Of what we here possess.
